Smell of smoke and gunpowder filled the air. There were explosions all around the tower. Tom sounded the alarm and began returning fire, trying in vain to stop the screams of his fellow soldiers reaching his ears. "Take that you bastards,"he shouted as he fired his AK-47 indiscriminately towards the sound of firearms. Tanks streamed past very close to the tower. Tom could see enemy soldiers stealing stealthily towards his post. He pulled the pin from a grenade and threw it towards them with all his might. It landed just behind the enemy, exploded, sending many of those enemy soldiers hurtling into the air. Now he could hear the loud pops of an enemy machine gunner in close proximity. Several bullets passed by, missing him by a whisker. He stood up to return fire but his ammunitions had finished. He took out his field knife, jumped from his tower, saw his attacker and cut off his throat. Tom wiped the blood on his trousers, avoiding looking at the dead man at his feet. He ducked low and kept moving slowly, pausing and looking around. Several soldiers were moving towards the tower. From the eerie silence, Tom knew he was the only survivor left, to protect the camp. He felt no fear, even without any ammo, and only a field knife. He had once fought a hundred armed soldiers with only a spear. He was going to make those bastards pay for killing his friends. "Tom,"he heard someone calling him. He looked around surprised. The tower, gunshots and soldiers had disappeared. "Yes, mom,"10-year old Tom replied. "Come have your dinner."His mom said,"You can play later."

The thing that gives me saddness is knowing that a 10 year old might know so much about war.
Thank you.
Video games, TV, imagination, army men, GI Joe...
Nothing better than blowing stuff up when you are 10 years old.
And yes- ask anyone who has been around war time in Cambodia, the Balkans, Vietnam or southern Africa - the kids are too well versed in death and destruction, which breaks the heart.
Sorry for ranting - wonderful story. Thank you!
My youngest nephew is only 9 but he knows so much about killing, maiming in war. As Travis says there is no dearth of things from where he learns all these.
In Afganistan kids were used to kalasinovs...real ones...
Now I suppose in Iraq too children are no longer children..
Just a couple of examples...
Toy guns are passe....Kids wish for real ones....
i am really impressed by the writer
very gripping... good going gautami
Carol, this is the legacy of our unthinking war-mongering leaders.
Well done story.
Sorry I haven't been around much lately, my dear, to read your work--seems like you're posting a lot lately, which is great!
