At 9:34 p.m. last night the Associated Press called Mike Hatch the DFL gubernatorial candidate. Lourey spoke just after 10:30 p.m., graciously conceding the race but stating, "We will continue to fight for the common good." Incumbent Tim Pawlenty won the race for the GOP and Peter Hutchinson (IP) received almost twice as many votes as his challenger, Pam Ellison.
In the attorney general race, Lori Swanson won over Steve Kelley and Bill Luther for the DFL. Jeff Johnson took the race for the GOP against Sharon Andersen, and John James will represent the Independence Party on November's ballot.
As expected, Amy Klobuchar (D) will face Mark Kennedy (R) in the U.S. Senate race. But some voters in Minnesota's 5th congressional district were surprised when Keith Ellison overtook Mike Erlandson. Ellison (D) will face Alan Fine (R) in the battle for Congressman Sabo's seat.
In other interesting races, DFL-endorsed Wendy Wilde handily won the U.S. House race in the 3rd district and the GOP's Obi Sium easily overtook Jack Shepard for U.S. House in the 4th district.

Here is the best information on Ellison. His affiliation with CAIR makes me very uneasy. Even more uneasy if I were to be Jewish. I would like to have some Jewish folks in the Fifth district give their opinion on this.
I'm so glad there is the alternative media to find and publish this stuff. I think the mainstream media, including MPR and Star Tribune, are to politically correct and have too much liberal guilt to really expose this guy. It is a real diservice to the public. It took multiple blogs for the word to get out and finally, because the blogs and talk radio had discussed it so much that the Star Trib and MPR finally talked about it, with kid gloves though.
I think that this is very important seeing that District 5 includes many Jewish people.
How much is Al Franken contributing? Or 527 groups Al Franken is channeling his money thru?
Blogs are great, but you can't always believe what you read there either.
And you can't always believe what the Star Tribune says either.
The internet and talk radio give the common person access to the news without the editors or information gatekeepers getting in the way. I say if the Star Tribune and MPR did their job, I wouldn't need to follow the blogs.
The mainstream media thinks they are still the "Woodwards and Bernstiens" of journalism, they are not.
She has been a candidate in every election cycle since I can remember, and always takes votes away from the party endorsed candidate. I think she may have even won a Soil & Water Conservation district race once.
But if you hear her speak or read her opinions the first word jumping to mind is crackpot.
The Republicans need a guy named "Joseph Mauer" to run for office as a Democrat, just to screw up the primaries. THAT WOULD BE FUNNY.
Many current Republicans, including myself, use the phrase " I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me".
With all that's going on internationally with Islamic extremists and locally with Keith Ellison, will more Jews be saying this? Do they just plug their nose?
Add another voice. I voted for Wellstone in his first election by the mid-90's, I wouldn't vote a Democrat in as a dog-catcher.
If I still were in the Democratic fold, I would be comfortable with Mike Hatch, but beyond that.....I cannot think of a single Democrat that I would vote for.
To an extent I can understand the idea that people didn't leave the Democratic party, but it left them, which is why I always thought it was better to vote by issues that blindly by party affiliation.
Regarding Keith Ellison, I was suprised by his American Jewish World endorsement, and their comparision for him to Wellstone was interesting to say the least.
They are a very far left organizaiton who supports the Palestinians in keeping with the enforced political correctness of other quassi-socialist groups.
Paul Wellstone despised the American Jewish World.
What we need now for the Democratic Party is another Hubert Humphrey to clear out the far left and draw the center back in before the party ceases to exist.
For people like me who the party left, there is still hope that one day we would again be attracted to DFL politics. The only way that is going to happen is if the party cleans up its act.
You make an excellent point, Greg.
I believe that it was the Walking Caucus System that originally was the culprit. These system encouraged "activists" to focus all of politics on narror issues which led, I believe, to a focus on narrow activism.
Now we have a party hierarchy and structure that is dominated by narrow interests who by alienating common people force a further narrowing of interests.
The party itself needs to change from an activst club to a broadbased organization that draws its power directly from common people.
- The party structure should flattened.
- People who represent other organizations should be barred from party office.
- The endorsement process should be scrpped in favor of a series of primary.
There was the core of the old DFL, big rough-handed guys in bad suits still bearing the battle scars of WWII, Korea and the labor struggles. They sat there dumbfounded as they party that they built and fought for was turned over to whispy bearded kids and pinched-faced femminists.
I watched as they turned to each other and mouthed the words "What the f**k!"
Years later I encountered the same guys at Republican caucuses. They still wore the same suits.....god love them.
