and Fourth of July Cake. Oh heck, just got to my namespace and choose one.

isn't it the truth, nobody could bake like my grandmother.

Oh yes....everything tastes better when mom makes it....

Yes, she did, Ed--and for birthays, holidays, and surprise days (when she wanted to give us a surprise). The conversations that went along with these delights have left a permanently warm place in my heart. I can hear her laugh as I write this. Thank you for reminding me.

'Drool' is such an under-appreciated word, Jeannie. Especially when one of these warm, frosted delights hits the table and all eyes lock-on.

Hmmmm, all the sweets sound wonderful (will be baking date nut and zucchini breads this week myself) But reading this, it was a peaceful beauty of Mother Earth's mountain ranges and forests frosted in all her beautiful fall colors that I saw in my minds eye. Thanks for the images good sir.

There was a cake once that celebrated an outing in the mountains with scouts, Lisa. It was baked for a bunch of city kids who were overjoyed by the notion of camping while knowing they knew nothing about camping; it left them jabbering all sorts of nonsense in anticipation of the trip. They laughed nervously at unseen perils, spoke of setting up tents and cooking over fires they built by themselves. When they returned three days later, tired and full of silence, they were greeted by mom and a cake which proclaimed them "men of the woods". It was topped with a tall, forested mountain, and a lake that rippled through the middle of it. The kids couldn't wait to dive in. With gentle prodding as they ate, their fresh memories started to flow and soon they happily recalled all about the weekend and what things they had done. Mom, of course, encouraged them until the cake was a plate of crumbs and it was time to part. That came to be known as the "Mountain Cake"; us kids talked about it and our trip from time to time, and when we did, there was always talk about my mom and her desserts.
