A new little restaurant has opened in Inman Square -- All Star Sandwich Bar. It's a great little place to dine in or you can place an order and take it to go. Their sandwiches are delicious. They didn't stop with great ingredients, they also have great bread.
The Sandwich Bar has some traditional sandwiches like a reuben and a BLT, but they have some interesting twists, too. You have 3 choices for grilled cheese:
• swiss, applewood smoked bacon, russian dressing, on rye
• vermont cheddar, tomato-raisin chutney, on pumpernickel
• jack cheese, avocado, chipotle mayo, on ciabatta
I opted for choice number 3 and was not disappointed. As I said, the bread was amazing. It was the perfect choice for the sandwich stuffing.
My dining companion and I ordered a side order of french fries to share. Oh...My...God! Plan on sharing plate of fries with 4 people, or plan on having it as your meal. You can get chili cheese fries or gravy fries, too.
Speaking of chili, their Texas State Pen. Chili is great! There are no beans or tomatoes. It is made with shredded beef and has so much meat you could eat it with a fork! I wasn't sure I was going to like it when I saw it because I'm used to chili with ground beef, but I became a quick fan. It has just the right amount of spice for me, though it may be too much for a tender-tongue. And who wouldn't like an all-meat chili when the meat is the best quality!
The staff is friendly, helpful, and are ready to go out of their way to get anything you'd like. They forgot my dining companion's sandwich -- a meatloaf sandwich -- but that was ok because we had plenty to share with the overwhelming fries and delicious chili. We made mention of it when a server was at our table, just so he could take it off the bill. We had chili and fries we were taking home anyway, so we didn't need anything more. One of the managers overheard us and came back with two coupons for free sandwiches.
We'll definitely be going back, even if we hadn't been given free sandwiches for our next visit. Delicious food, unique menu options (that aren't too far out there), and a great staff -- how can you go wrong?
All Star Sandwich Bar is at 1245 Cambridge Street. It's two doors down from Christinas -- the ice cream place I reviewed a couple of weeks ago. Save room for the ice cream, if you can. The Sandwich Bar is closed on Sunday, but you can enjoy their faire from 11 to 9 Monday through Thursday and 11 to 10 on Fridays and Saturdays. Oh, and you can check out their menu and get directions on their website.
