Steve Irwin is for many an iconic Australian, highlighting one part of the aussie male psychii, much as Paul Hogan highlights the warm hearted smartarse side of us.

All of us knew, at one time or another, the fearless aussie mate who would leave our heads shaking at his often death (and common sense) defying antics that sometimes resulted in injury, but always entertainment.

Steve was killed hours ago buy a stingray barb in the chest while filming - the venom most likely caused cardiac arrest due to the location he was hit.

He was fearless, wasn't he? It was thrilling to watch him get so close to dangerous animals, time after time, making me want to hide my face but still peek out at him. I know it's a funny thing to say, but I didn't expect it. I somehow thought he'd cheated death so many times that he would end up dying old and in bed.

I feel badly for his family but he died doing what he loved most.
