Dial up Gather member reaches 3000 points in under 30 days

I get so frustrated trying to leave a comment on an article that has 25 or more comments.  Having to deal with the dial up network of AT&T which seems to be worse than SBC and Pacbell combined. I was about to pen a title for an article:

Gather=Dialup= frustrated user, but I went to my gather and noticed I finally hit that 3,000 mark.  I started here on August 6th and here it is Sep 2nd and I got them.

I am not interested in the cash option, since I would use my paypal for ebay purchases or the card at the grocery store and I want the Gift cards to get holiday stuff for my kids.

I wanted to see if I personally could reach 3,000 points in the thirty day alloted period, even though technically it was not a calendar month it is still within thirty days.

For days I kept losing my connection after 15 minutes and thought I would lose my mind.  It is possible folks to be on a stinking dial up connection and reboot countless times a day and still get the 3,000 points - if that is what you want to achieve.

I want members to know that I do read your stuff, but I cannot sit and wait with priceless dial up seconds ticking away to leave a comment.  I am more than happy to send a comment via private message if you would like to know that someone else was reading and wanted to comment, but could not.

Is this something members would like, or is an anonymous rating just as good.  If I understand correctly you get some sort of point for a connected person reading and then more points for a rating, so my visit is giving you something, but then I feel left out of the converstation and discussions since I cannot add a comment and most times cannot come back to visit and see what has been discussed since my visit.

These are the frustrations I deal with on this site, but hey I got 3,009 points on  dial up.

Very impressive! I don't know how you have the patience to do this on dial-up! I get frustrated with cable not being fast enough at times. :-)

i'm on dial up, so I TOTALLY understand what you're saying!! It takes forever for all of the comments to show up...if the article is really great though i'll wait for them sometimes...but usually I just let them load long enough for me to be able to post...because I learned that if they don't all load before I start typing all of what i've already typed disappears!!

i am on dial up too which i hate.. and in my neck of the woods the only thing i can get is dsl which is costly .. but this is good to know :) thank you

Congratulations! I'm tailing behind you in points. I was hoping to make it to 3,000 by the 4th, but it's looking less likely. Did you notice the number of points you receive drop off last week? I was posting and being read the same amount, but my points just hung at the same place. I'm hoping for a big whopper update that will skid me into 3,000 points before the deadline.

By the way, did you receive your invitation to opt for cash? I wonder how quickly they pick up on someone receiving 3,000 points in a month.

I am truly amazed at your patience with this site through a dial-up connection. Don't worry about comments. Your ratings are certainly appreciated. And you can always post a new article in the same group if you have a significant comment to make. Have fun...that's the most important!

What I would like to know is this...specifically, what do people get points for? I mean, I know what it says on F.A.Q's, but I would like to know, for example, how many points do we get if someone signs up that we invite, how many points do we get if we rate an image, an article...that sort of thing....just some expectation on how many points we receive and for what...EXACTLY. Anyway, points are nice because you can exchange them for the various Gift Cards and the such...Now, that all this talk about points has come up, I am interested in just HOW they work. It is very nice to be rewarded just for sharing an interest with people, helping people, just doing what you love...very nice!

Wow! I applaud you guys for doing this on dial-up. I'm so glad to FINALLY have DSL and down here in FL Bellsouth offers a wonderful deal. $24.99 a month for the slower DSL "which is still wayyyyyy faster than dial-up". I did have to get one step above that plan though so I can use the wireless acess

I have dial-up with Verizon, and I don't have much problem at all. UNLESS the comment stream gets really long (more than 60 or so). I don't like even that, and it was not as bad before they added the orange balloons. That orange, for whatever reason, takes more effort.

Boy I was an A student in spelling but the typing is not the same as on paper and the light is so bright sometimes it seems blinding to me I think I need a dark thing over the screen to cut the glare. anyway it was a good article bonnie and keep it going. I am happy you got your points. and I haven't been here long but saw I had some but I didn't know exactly what they were for,and now I guess I do, but I do read the wrok of everyone here and comment on everything,so I guess I should be writing more here .I have a lot of things to talk about but never know where to start. Anyway it was a good article bonnie and I am happy for you.

I'm impressed. I have DSL and I only have 1,000 since I signed up in July. But then I'm not trying very hard either. LOL

Congratulations! Get the kids some good gifts. Mine always loved books. They are grown and still love them. I will probably get the Barnes and Noble gift cards for them. They shop there all the time!

Angie - they are not going to give that information out. That would be like telling someone at the store who is buying an item that the next day it will be 40% off.

I think in a way it is a good thing since it keeps us curious as to how to get there and gives us something to strive for. Well something like that, cannot think since I want to post this before I get disconnected.

Sometimes, I read stuff, and I have nothing to say, but I always make sure to rate, because that, to me, is important, even if I may not have a comment.

I thought some dropped but maybe that was from me commenting on my own stuff. I just checked and did not see the cash option available to me, but not sure where that would be anyway.

I also hate when posting a comment and then it disappears since the download is not complete.

I have dial-up and an infant so if it is not one thing not letting me post it is another. I get frustrated because everything seems to go so slow...there is no way I would reach 3000 points in 30 months!!

DSL is so much faster if you can get it. It is worth the extra money if it's in your budget and available in your location. Congratulations on meeting your goal!

I cannot believe you made it. COOL. I have broadband and I am still feeling frustrated with all the "page cannot be displayed" errors. I think maybe Gather.com needs a faster or larger server or something. A lot of times, it's probably not your connection. It's Gather.com being down. Anyway.... You must be on Gather.com a lot. I don't think I'll be able to reach that mark. Congratulations.

Funny - I have dial up because my husband and I are both too inept to hook up the DSL modem package - my son (7) learned computers in school and will probably be the one to accomplish this task (we have said no until now but 9 months have gone by...)

WOW that is great to have reached that mark. Another option because some people can not get dsl is wildblue. it is less expensive than dish network and direct tv. i paid $299 for the dish and modem and then I pay $49 per month for the service. for those that live in cities i understand that this is a little pricey but when faced with only dial up as your other options it is well worth it. anyways any dial uppers that are interested just visit www.wildblue.net or call 501-455-9292 i am sure the people here will be glad to find you a sales rep in your area. They were a great help to me when I first got mine. I purchased a new computer after having mine hooked up so I needed to figure out how to hook up to my new computer, I called the office just to leave a message as it was around 8 pm i didnt expect anyone to be there but the main guy there was working from his cell phone and walked me through the whole process of rehooking it up. I thought that was great service.

I have cable, which is near instantaneous in speed, but the way Gather is sometimes, I really feel for the dial up folks. If you could switch you should, you will enjoy everything so much better. I did mine through a package deal that included digital TV, telephone, and cable Internet access. It all came to $15 more a month for the Internet, compared to what I was paying for those separately with dial-up, well worth it.
I spend so much time reading that I guess that is why I don't earn many points. (don't really care) I'm on almost every day, but have a little under 5000 points since February. I comment a lot (I think) but don't publish too many articles I suppose.

That's impressive! I got 650 in 5 days and thought that was pretty good. Hang in there and keep racking up those points.

Way to go. It's taken me many months to reach that point. Of course I certainly don't have much incentive since you don't really qualify for anything much as a Canadian.
I have cable....It is fast for me..BUt I am trying to figure things out. So I am not racking up many points as of yet.
