I try to post in comment sections, but it is quite impossible since my dial up disconnects me before the boatload of comments gets loaded and than I have to start over again.
When I come back online it looks like the same people posting articles over and over again, do they come up for air? It is not just because it is the last day of the month either, they go on and on like the energizer bunny and people keep commenting - I find it amazing that so much other stuff gets overlooked to give these same people a pat on the back.
Anyway, back to my questions. In random order things I need help with and would like to know the answers. Got an idea or clue, please post it here and maybe that is the correct answer. Anything is better than NOT knowing.
1. What is the time zone Gather is set to, is it east or west coast time. It is now 9:12 pm CA time, so does this count as August 31st or as Sep 1st. Guess the way to find out is when I post and go to my articles to see the date it posts as.
2. The site says you need to get 3,000 points in a given month, is that a full thirty days or a calendar month. For example I joined on August 6th, do I have until Sep 6th to get 3000 points or tonight?
Personally I am interested in gift cards anyway to get holiday gifts for my kids - one son loves Goosebumps and cat books. But I was doing a little competition with myself to see if I could get 3000 points in a given month, so I am counting through to Sep 6th and only 245 points away from that point cap.
3. If I use in my email signature line one of my gather groups and someone goes there and joins Gather and then my group - do I get credit for that as someone who joined up or just someone who joined my group? If I use my personal namespace in my signature line no one would find my group and I and Gather might lose a potential new member.
4. How do you get a link in this section, no not this kind, http://autismfamilies.gather.com but the kind that would have Autism Families in a clickable link, yet this does not work on here - Autism Families and the publishing page has no direct information on that.
I tried the link icon in the publish page here and a pop-up window opened up, I placed the link and then tried to insert it and NOTHING HAPPENED.
Please enlighten me as to how this can be accomplished - in simple terms please...
5. Most Read listings - When it shows the views, is this for member views only or does it include outside views? Just curious and did note that the majority of articles in those lists that I have skimmed are gather related.
That is all I can remember at the moment and must post this before I lose a stinking connection!

But I do have a suggestion for the "losing connection and having to start over again" issue. You can open a Word document and type in there. Then after you are done typing, copy and paste your content into the comment box or the article box. That way even if Gather.com is disconnected, you don't lose what you have typed.
2. the FAQs say a calendar month
3. no, you have to actually invite someone to get credit for them signing up.
4. When you re posting, at the top where you can edit font, etc, there is a little button that looks like a chain link. Highlight the text that you want to insert a link to and then click that button. A window will pop up, paste your link in that address bar (and check the box that says open in a new window).
5. I assume anyone who looks at it is counted, but I don't know.
I am right there with you on those people who just post over and over and over and over... we are probably thinking of the same people! Frustrating and annoying. Either people who are trying to just get points from obsessive posting or people who are new and are excited about posting (I sort of fell into this category when I first signed up) or just annoying people... hehe
Jennifer answered your questions, but I do have a few additional thoughts.
2. I am unclear if the cash option is turned on after just your first month, but I would suspect that it is calculated at the first of each month. Hence, you may have to wait until October 1.
3. Yes, you must invite non-Gather members to your group through the group's 'Invite' button, in order to get points for their enrollment.
4. If you have trouble using the 'link' button, check to ensure that you are pasting a complete and accurate URL. If you are still having difficulty, try highlighting the entire surrounding area, and clicking the 'unlink' button to the immediate right of the 'link' button. This usually clears up problems for me.
5. I have never received a clear answer on this.
5. I believe that outside views would count. However it depends upon how Gather identifies a 'unique' outside view.
Good luck.
Before the New Gather, people were getting many more views. I think that was 'total hits' and this is 'unique views'....accounting for a much lower rate of view hits.
Gathe must have a very good reason for switching to unique views, rather than total hits. My hunch tells me it might have somthing to do with advertisers.
Personally I would use my paypal card at the grocery store and want the gift cards for holiday time, but as a personal test for myself I wanted to see if I could get 300 points in a given month and since I started on Aug 6th and today is Sep 2nd and I am 18 points away so I can do it and now can relax and just read and post and save up for some Gift cards.
Hope that explains my reasonings at least.
i'll be the first to admit that i came her cuz the point system was alluring to me. but now that im here i am very fascinated with everything..
i love to read the articles. im not a good writer so i dont write long stuff
P.S. I do not understand all your questions on links, mine work the way I want them to. Perhaps it is a dumb question but when you are linking to your article do you watch if the little box is checked "open into a new window" or not?
When you do get 3,000 in one month, do bells and sirens go off, or do you just automatically get notified that the check is in the mail???
