August 27, 1883 After 3 massive explosions spanning 16 hours, the volcanic island of Krakatoa suffers a final, inconceivably destructive blast. The resulting noise is reported to have been heard 3,000 miles away in the island of Madagascar. Two-thirds of the island's land mass collapses into the ocean, resulting in a 175-foot tsunami, which wipes away 162 coastal towns and villages along the Sunda Straight, and killing 36,675 inhabitants.

I saw a show on Mt Vesuvius(sp?), and a nearby caldera miles across, not long ago on TV that has the same potential. Millions of people are too close, and over a hundred thousand live within the massive caldera. (I can't remember the name of it)
When those go off someday again, it is going to be horrific. The geology supports repeated giant eruptions over thousands of years. Scary stuff.
