My family is very interested in Broadway and Off-Broadway theater. Most recently, we went to see Disney's newest musical, Tarzan. Nine of us went, including 2 children, ages 7 and 4.
If you didn't already know, Tarzan is the story of a man who was left to be raised by apes. He grows up not knowing anything of the human world, and only know the apes to be his family. Some expeditioners come to the Island where he and his family live. One of the expeditioners is Jane, who ends up teaching him about the human world, and who he ends up falling in love with.
The show opened with a thunderstorm, scaring the kids (and the adults) half to death! Once the thunderstorm was over, the kids all calmed down and the gorgeous sets began to come out! The music was fairly unexciting (written by Phil Collins) except for one song, "You'll Be In My Heart," the song that is constantly played on the radio. The actors and actressed had AMAZING voices which made the show fantastic and my favorite character was young Tarzan, who was played by a little boy who could win American Idol if he auditioned! (Speaking of American Idol, Josh Strickland who plays the older Tarzan, was a finalist.)
Although the adults didn't walk out of the theater too thrilled with spending all the money on tickets, the kids loved it and were mesmerized by the music and the beautiful sets. If you want to see a show with the kids, I recommend The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast over Tarzan, however if you've already seen those two, Tarzan is a good option. If you are only going with adults, you might want to opt for Three Penny Opera, The Producers or even an Off-Broadway comedy!
