Among the many reactionary precepts encouraged by our current administration is the banal old Creationism vs. Evolution debate, which, despite its arrant salute to ignorance, amuses me for many reasons. Not the least of these is the Fundamentalists' abject admiration of the human body, as the ultimate example of so-called ''intelligent design'', the current euphemism for ''creationism''. After all, they postulate, we were created in god's perfect image, and therefore our bodies must also be faultless.
So my question is, if we are, indeed, knockoffs of the divine design, why are we are put together so poorly? If any mechanical engineer had built a prototype of the human body, it would have been laughed off the drawing board, and he would have been fired on the spot. Esophagus and trachea side by side? Great idea! Inhale instead of swallow and you choke to death. The fetal exit in the narrowest, boniest part of the female body instead of that nice big space behind the belly button? Excellent! Let the bitch go through hell to push a huge-headed alien through a tiny canal. God doesn't care...he's a guy! (Of course, he also got so pissed off at Eve for that apple incident he yelled, "in pain you shall bring forth children." Does anyone know how many hours of labor Mary endured to give the old grouch a kid?)
And that's just the start of it. If we are to believe the creationists, we don't have sinus problems and backaches because we were originally four-legged animals, with our spines and noses horizontal to the ground. We have these ailments because we are built by god's intelligent design. We don't have to endure knee and hip replacements because those joints were never made to support an upright position. That's the way he meant them to be. We haven't lost our furry insulation through the evolutionary process and been forced to invent imitation coverings. It was god's idea to leave our skin unprotected from the elements. I could go on an on, but anyone with half a brain can examine his own body and recognize the glaring errors in the blueprint.
All of which leads me to wonder: if, as the creationists would have it, god and man are mirror images, is the creator spending eternity suffering from bunions and migraines, just because he went to the Pisa School of Engineering? And what about his sex life? He can't be getting much, since he only seems to be attracted to married virgins. Come to think of it, maybe that's why he's stomping around, wreaking so much havoc upon our poor little planet. God needs to get laid! How's that for a revelation?
I'm going for a walk. My tailbone is beginning to ache.
The sight of that twenty-foot exhortation gave rise to further fiscal musings. Like wondering if he gets royalties on the bible, and if so, what percentage goes to his ghostwriters. As to the acquisition of funds, how does he square chasing the money changers out of the temple with the weekly passing of the tithe basket? And, by the way, what's he doing with all that cash? Obviously not paying child support. God as deadbeat dad: gotta love the metaphor.

As you know I am a believer, but don't worry I won't pray for you. :)
I don't believe in creationism myself. I know alot of modern christians do accept evolution. It seems to be the fundamentalists' that have no appreciation for evolution.
While I found you article to be humorus, and thought provoking, I do worry about the common scare tactics presented by churchs to get new members into thier church. I find it disturbing when churches use these tactics and plaster them on bill boards (or live television broad cast) I worry about the perception it leaves people with regarding christianty and organized religion.
Anybody who wants to further their spiritual journey by whatever faith should do so because the feel it is right for them. Not because it has been forced upon them, or because they have had the crap scared out of them.
I mention this because I don't want to leave you, or anyone else, with the impression that in order to be a christian you must be a bible beater. Not all christians are about taking the word of the bible literally. We don't all preach fire, hell, and damnation. Christians that do follow a more fundamentalist and it works for them should keep doing it, but be respectful to everyone and thier choices.
One last note, I thought this was a very well written article. Nice work.
I think your average Christian does not believe in Creationism.
Your article was interesting with its analogies!
Well they had to come up with something.
MIKE S!!!! - Evolution IS science. Most sciences use it as an assumed operating principle. To be anti-evolution is to be anti-science, by definition. No proof? It's a theory. Theory IS science!
Fear always sells.
