I was raised Roman Catholic. I went to Catholic grade school and high school. I learned a lot. What I learned about God is still at the core of my beliefs, but, like a tree, I've branched out over the years. My beliefs have overflowed the borders of one religion. I'm open to learning from any tradition, as I feel we have all been created by God and have sparks of God within us.
The Universe, Great Mystery, Yah, God, are all names that mean the same to me. The Universe is everything. We are all part of the Universe and we are all One. But there are other layers of the Universe we don't see. I have only recently come to believe more in a spirit-world, where angels and our ancestors abide. They can make themselves known to us if we are open to the possibility.
As I wrote the paragraph above, I was reminded of the trinity. I never quite understood the concept before, but now it is beginning to make sense. The Universe has the 3 layers of the trinity -- body (all of us working/living together as one), spirit (angels, ancestors, and other spirits we may not be aware of), and a higher power, an ultimate Creator.
The core set of beliefs I was raised with have served me well. When I learn more about Yah from other perspectives, paths, or religions, those beliefs that were once flat become multidimensional.

No tradition has a monopoly on truth.
John, I'm not a warrior in the battle you describe. Check out my Are You Spiritual? article at http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474976778135
I agree with you about God not being the one who is lost. I feel like I am just beginning to see God in greater detail than I ever have before. It's not perfectly in focus, but it gets clearer with everything I learn.
