Part of our whirlwind tour of New England this year was a day trip in to Plymouth, MA. It was a quick 20-minute ride from East Taunton in Uncle Johnny's van. (Six adults and a two-year-old!)

We saw Plymouth Rock itself. The rock apparently has shrunk in size since the day our forefathers landed on it. Tourism and collectors have been chipping away at it for years, so now it is safely locked away, but available for viewing. (We chose not to snap a picture of it, as it was, after all, just a rock. Besides I'd hate to spoil the surprise for you!)

Although a little too touristy for my taste, we did shell out a few bucks to walk aboard The Mayflower II. Cheesiness aside, it was sobering to think of how many people had to live aboard ships that size, crossing an ocean for months at a time. We couldn't help but comment on how suprising it was that anyone ever made it at all!
The Ocean Spray cranberry visitor center was closed, but we did check out the Cranberry House - a gift shop featuring souvenirs of New England, especially anything cranberry related. I managed to walk away with a bag of chocolate covered cranberries, which were delicious!

It was a beautiful (if hot) day to walk around in the sunshine and think about American History. Not oodles of excitement, but just right for a group that included two octogenarians and a toddler!

That said, I wish you could have gone to a lighthouse somewhere. That would have been cool, in a Jonny Quest-esque kind of way.
I wish we had seen and done more in the Plymouth areas, too. But there is only so much a toddler and two octogenarians can take on a hot summer day!
