Many Democrats may hate the war in Iraq and itch to dump the president, but a new GOP survey shows that Republican base voters stand ready to jam the November polls to return their team to Congress. A three-page-survey memo obtained by Washington Whispers reveals that despite reports of some dissatisfaction with the economy, the war, and President Bush, 81 percent of Republican voters are "almost certain" to vote and an additional 14 percent say they are "very likely." It goes without saying that they'll vote Republican: By a margin of 84 percent to 6 percent, they will pull the GOP toggle switch in the voting booth. And here is something you don't hear very often: 88 percent of Republicans approve of how the prez is handling his job. What's it all mean? Analysts say that GOP voters are ready to dig in and play defense against the charges Democrats are tossing at Republican candidates.
This is a GOP study so clearly the results should be taken with a grain of salt...but I'm not so sure that there isn't a bit of truth here too.
I do believe that many in the Republican base are frustrated with the Republicans in power. These Republicans were elected to be conservatives, but what we've gotten in return hasn't been conservatism. This, more than anything else, is why Republicans from the President down to members of Congress are suffering from low approval numbers. But as I pointed out in a post earlier today I just don't think these low approval numbers translate into support for liberal Democrats.
As frustrated as the conservative base may be with Republicans what incentive do they have to vote for Democrats? Certainly voting for a Democrat is no way to solve spending problems, and the thought of putting the party of Howard Dean in charge of the war on terror probably makes most Americans want to hide under the bed.
We'll probably hear again and again going into the elections in November that the Republicans are in trouble, but ultimately I think it will all prove to be little more than a bunch of hype. If anything, the Republicans will lose because they lost votes from their base rather than because the Democrats gained votes.
Which is no vote of confidence for liberalism.

I can't imagine having so little self-respect that I would fall for this, "we'll feed the blind idiots what they need to hear in order to hold their allegiance to being in." It's so obvious that this is what they count on if you listen to terminology like The American people, when clearly the statement that follows applies only to a few of the American people. Or polls show, when they've polled five of their closest friends.
I don't think "The American people" are half as stupid as they're hoping this time.
At least one of them apparently is. ;-)
