Ice Cream is my favorite dessert. And, being a New Englander, I just have to help keep up our rating as being the largest consumers of ice cream. So, whenever I get the chance, I check out an ice cream shop.
Last night's cool treats came from Christina's in Cambridge. My standard favorite is a coffee ice cream with chocolate or toffee or, better yet, both! Christina's has a flavor called Gina's Mocha Explosion. Even without the toffee, it knocks the socks right off my taste buds. Combine it with a scoop of Mexican Chocolate (chocolate with a hint of cinnamon) and I fall right into ice cream bliss.
Since I had that particular combo on my previous visit, I decided to give Christina's the true test -- I bought low-fat frozen yogurt. Most ice cream shops are sub-par when it comes to low-fat varieties. Only the truly gifted frozen confection makers can make a low-fat variety that's worth it.
I'm happy to report that Christina's knows how to keep the taste even when they lower the fat. I bought a scoop of Chocolate Mousse and a scoop of Coffee Toffee. I brought it back to the car with the previously mentioned combo for my partner, the chocolate hound. She wouldn't touch frozen yogurt if her life depended on it. Hates the flavor. But I was ooohing and aaahing so much over my Chocolate Mousse, she finally gave in and took a tiny taste. After that I had to hold on to my cup with both hands and keep it out of her arm's reach! If she didn't have a cup of her own, I certainly would have lost mine!
Moral of the story: Give low-fat varieties a try only in ice cream shops that have won over your taste buds on their regular varieties, visit Christina's the next time you are in the neighborhood, make it your business to BE in the neighborhood, and....buy extra! You will likely be forced to share whatever you buy for yourself.

I have to give a thumbs down on Coldstone. I recently went to the one in Bellingham and the experience was totally unpleasant from beginning to end, including the smoothie that I waited 20 minutes for.
