Well, I went and did it. I cashed in a few thousand of my Gather points and splurged on $75.00 worth of Omaha Steak gift certificates. If you have never tried an Omaha steak, I wholly recommend them. Luckily, we have an Omaha Steak store here, so I didn't have to go the mail order route. The only potentially negative thing was that the certificates have to be spent in their entirety, as they do not give credits. Believe me, this was not a problem. Not spending my entire paycheck in there, THAT was a problem. Not only do they have amazing steaks, but also seafood, pork, desserts, and sides. Everything is frozen in individual serving size portions, which is convenient.
Bill and I went on a little shopping spree last evening, and for our $75 in gift certificates, plus $5 (excuse me, $5.17, according to Bill) of cold hard cash, we came away with enough meat to last a month or so. Everything we purchased was on sale, which made me giddy in itself.
We bought:
A box of four filet mignons
A box of Mediterranean encrusted Salmon filets
A box of Filet of sole stuffed with scallops and crab
A box of sirloin tips
A 2 lb. ham
Not bad for a few articles and comments, huh?
Tonight, we had Surf & Turf. A nice Filet mignon, broiled to juicy perfection, a portion of stuffed sole, baked simply in butter, salt, pepper and paprika, and a nice salad made a fabulous meal.
I know I should use some of my points for the library project, (I promise, Danielle!)and I plan to, but every once in a while we have to do something totally selfish for ourselves, and this was mine.
Thanks for dinner, Gather. Come on by anytime, I'll cook.

I cut my steak with my FORK. They were fabulous!
Nancy,
I have a really hard time buying things for myself, which is another article all its own, but I bought these, telling myself that I was doing it for Bill...big lie..teehee.
Most of us have forgotten what good beef tastes like. We talk about "prime rib" as though all beef ribs were "prime." They're not. The word "prime" refers to a well-defined set of characteristics displayed only by the best beef. Most "prime ribs" are actually "choice" ribs, a poorer grade.
Back when I last bought Omaha steaks they were "prime" grade. Furthermore, and actually more central to the issue of flavor, they were dry-aged. (Note: both characteristics may still be true of Omaha steaks, I haven't checked.)
In dry-aging, a piece of beef (ideally an entire side)
is hung in a cooler at around 35 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 30 days. During this time the meat undergoes chemical changes from internal enzymic reactions and exposure to oxygen. These chemical changes result in a deeper and richer "beef" flavor.
Truly good beef is indeed a real treat. I don't think you could have splurged better.

You go gurl! The market place of ideas is paying off! I'm going to clean up OHC BBQ pit #4...maybe it is time for a little Labor Day planning?
Cheers,

Kevin, I am unsure about their current aging processses also, but I do know good beef, and this was definitely prime. I was a little worried about trying the stuffed sole, but there are no artificial ingredients(I have MSG issues) , and it was deleftible. The stuffing didn't overpower the fish flavor, a little lemon butter made it even better. Thank you for the insight,
Laurie, Thanks, we plan to.
Colonel, I feel another picnin coming on. Teel ya what, I'll save that big ole box of sirloin tips for labor day, and find an appropriate recipe to post to OHC for the occasion.
Marilena, I'm working on it, but old habits die hard.
Aileen, Sounds like a plan to me....
Susan, I bought a B&N certificate too, but haven't used it yet...
Martha, Sorry dear.
They are individually wrapped, but they are raw!
Hannah, Setting an extra place as we speak...You bring the wine
Moya, Next time you're in the states, I'll cook you dinner.
It sounds like a package from Omaha Steaks is worth it. I've always wondered if meat by mail cold be any good.
It's an open invite, dorine. Just knock on the door. My Mama taught me to always fix enough for "strays"....
We have an Omaha steak store here, so I didn't have to do the mail order thing, but from what I understand, the quality is just as good. They come packed with dry ice to keep them frozen.
Lisa, sorry to disappoint..
When I ordered the steaks, I also ordered a $25 B&N card. I waited till I could get another, and then went and spent the $50 on books. Either way, you can't lose.
Thats why I am thankful we have an Omaha Steak store here. No need for the extra expense.
They are long gone now, as i worte this three months ago, but Bill and I combined our points and did it all over again in Sept.
Daniel, All I cn say is, write , write and write some more. BOth writing articles and commenting garners points. See, you just bought me at least a bite of one of those steaks, or maybe a page or two of my next book.
