What is interesting about boxing?

Why do people pay money to watch two people fight each other with boxing gloves on?  Or today, watch ultimate fighting, or various other blood sports?

Are people that interested to watch people fight each other in a boxing ring?  And for most of these main events, the price of admission tends not to be trivial, if memory serves me correctly.

The same reason we always have to look at car accidents. Cleary the answer is a moderate yes as people do attend and watch but they are not as prevalent as football or baseball. I can't really explain the why. I guess it is why some people like men and some like women. Its just the way they are.

I absolutely agree with you. By definition, this is boxing: Two people get in a ring. They bash the crap out of each other until one can no longer stand up.
And this is sport?????????????

The reason this was posted to the World War III group was because the current Israeli-Hebollah situation is similar to a boxing match. We haven't broken up the fight yet, and several say that we need to be careful not to break it up too soon, that both sides need to realize that there is great pain involved.

I am hopefull that once we do involve ourselves in the conflict, that all sides will have an appreciation. I fear that Iran will not yet have tired of the death of it's children. I fear that we will need to destroy more lives and stuff.

People have to express their aggressive/conquering impulses one way or another. This is better than dropping bombs on people. In ancient Greece, sometimes only two men would fight. The battle, and sometimes the war, was determined by which man won the fight. This is certainly more civilized than our approach. Maybe we could send Arnold to fight our battles, although I would like to send JW

Is it just me or does it seem that more guys like violence than women? (just an attempted generalization-of course there are exceptions) Could it be the desire to watch violence is genetic? Some behaviors come from our genetic make up, this one seems especially so. Any psychologists out there?

Good question, good analogy. I'd like to know, though, how the USA became the world's referee. Why should it be up to us to break up every fight that other nations get themselves involved in? And, what's in it for us?

I have never been able to understand the concept of purposely getting hurt or hurting someone else. It is beyond my comprehension.

The Coliseum in Rome, American Football, Football, Base Ball, Basket Ball, a War on TV are all about the same thing. Each has it's own version of ENTERTAINMENT VALUE and increased ad value.

Some would call boxing "Barbaric" well, precisely. It is testosterone! Its the same reason that men appear to be more violent. It is instinct warped into an intellectual coverup. It's ok to cause pain because we say it is philosophy, so to speak. People box for the adrenelin, for the danger, just like cliff jumping or sky diving. Others watch it to experince a bit of the "thrill" themselves. What is the difference between getting pleasure from watching others cause pain, and getting pleasure from you yourself inflicting it. On the street people are thrown in jail. In a ring they are praised.

EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN REASONS FOR WATCHING A BOXING MATCH. SOME JUST LIKE TO SEE SOMEONE 'GET THE CRAP BEAT OUT OF THEM' SOME ARE GAMBLERS, THEY HAVE MONEY BET ON THE WINNER. AND THEN SOME, MYSELF INCLUDED, APPRECIATE THE EFFORT AND THE TRAINING THAT GOES INTO IT. WE DONT JUST SEE THE BOXING MATCH. WE SEE WHAT COMES BEFORE IT. THE HOURS AND DAYS AND WEEKS OF TRAINING. THE DETERMINATION. THE SELF DISCIPLINE. WE KNOW THE SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU GET JUST FROM STEPPING INTO THE RING, JUST FOR ALL OF THE WORK YOU DID TO GET TO THAT MOMENT... THOSE ARE JUST MY THOUGHTS THOUGH :)

i myslef am an amauteur boxer i love it because of the intsity and excitment that is involved in doing it and it keeps me in good shape i agree it is ridculus prcing for alot of the events but if it is somethign you liek it is very much worth it (if you have it) but to ask hy is the same thing as like saying why do poepel liek books or paitnigs it is just a picture or just words on paper everyone has there own intrests and own likes if you arnt athletic i wouldnt expe ct you yo liek it but for alot of kids it is a way to get them away from drugs and keep them from getting in trouble or getting involved with the wrong group of kids after school it teaches leadership and self respect and keeps you healthy it is the most intense trainign in the world so there are alot of reasosn to liek it
