Another Bug Exhibit From Srbsko

Srbsko is a scant 6 kilometers west of Karlstejn, but the tourists haven't found it yet. For anyone coming from the American West, Srbsko is like a patch of home ground with the sheer cliffs rising up off the river on both sides. On the north side of the Beroun lay the ancient mines which are the favorite places for locals to go rock climbing. The area has been mined for more than 800 years, with limestone quarries hidden in the woods. Even with a map, it is easy for someone to get confused because none of the trail markers have notices, "this way to Srbsko Dummy" and "that way to the airport, Idiot" written on them. You're supposed to know red from white from yellow or recognize the difference between single and double stripes that are painted on trees at highly irregular intervals which can be in some cases nearly a kilometer apart.

The north side of the river has a biking trail which is conducive to walking, but the bikers make it hazardous to your health. It is only 12.5 kilometers to Beroun, so not such a difficult walk to make the circuit.

However, I came back one time on the southern side with the intent of climbing the rock up to Tetin. I never made it up the rock because I became absorbed in the first bug-shoot on the southern side of the Beroun River.

Since then, I've discovered the rich buglife on the southern side and am loathe to return to the hazardous nothern side. After 2-5 hours of shooting bugs, I am out of batteries and camera memory and am forced to retreat to the local watering place for some cold Czech beer. It really is difficult at times to sit down, but the train only passes through that neck of the woods every hour to pick up passengers which flood back to Prague on late Sunday evenings.

On the southern side, the Czech cowboys head for the woods with their guitars to hide in their bungalows and sing Czech cowboy western songs. The village has a little dance hall across from the pub next to the train station, so sitting and waiting only takes a little pre-occupation with a glass in hand.

it doesn't show well here. the downgrade is erally bad for photos and uploasding photos. there's never a time when gather doesn't crash on me

if you look above the ladybird, you'll see someone is plotting to snare her an across from her is the aphid which the ladybird eats--so it is a true cycle of predator victim

and I did not see it until today when I went to sig the pic

A great article, Mary. I especially like the bug shots. The one of the thistle impressed me especially - no leaves! You must have some tough bugs over your way - our thistles as a rule go uneaten.

Mary, this is a great collection of photos. As I remember, one of the first things I noticed when I was in Europe were the bugs. I mean, we expect language, food and culture to be different, but the bugs were a total suprise.

carl, they want to compete with you carl--you're always a total surprise,too! I'm surprised that along with ll your other hobbies, you hadn't taken up collecting bugs. is one of the brainiest occupations in world. ask nabokov and atwood for starters

I just read something hilarious last night, but have to put it elsewhere re:bugs and Tesla, who was an incredible genius but robbed by just about everyone.
