I was listening to Imus in the morning on MSNBC this AM, and Tom Rose was on. Tom Rose was/is(?) the former publisher(?) of the Jerusalem Post(?). Anyway, one interesting comment that was made was how Hezbollah is Iran. Hassan Nasrallah sits on the intelligence boards of the Iranian Government. This is scary, from the perspective of one who believes we should be far more peaceful than we are. At the same time, I see how we are sort of forced to enforce UN resolutions. We were forced to take out Saddam Hussein, because other countries in the UN were taking advantage of lucrative deals. We were forced to occupy Iraq, because it would be irresponsible for us to abandon a country once we dismantled the despotic regime in charge.

So, R.E., does this statement mean that you will support our possible plans for Iran?
It's really sad that I said to my husband as we watched the whole "shock and awe" campaign, if there are no WMDs then after the American people start seeing the body count rise and we start losing more people, the American people will turn against this war and demand we come home. Never have I ever been so depressed at being right.
The Bush administration is the most inept, stubborn in the face of all facts, lying, mean spirited, and clueless administration I have ever seen in my entire 47 years of life. I have lost all respect for anyone connected with them in any way. How anyone can support this insanity is beyond me.
What are they going to do about the Israel/Lebanon situation? Whatever it is I don't expect them to do anything right so I'm not holding my breath.
I fear we won't stand up until it is too late.
"They came for the gypsies, but I was not a Gypsy, so I did nothing."
JULY 1, 1937
MARTIN NIEMOELLER,
CHURCH DISSIDENT LEADER, ARRESTED
Martin Niemoeller, one of main opponents of Nazi racial ideology in the Lutheran church and one of the founders of the oppositional "Confessional Church," is arrested. He is sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1938 and spends the next seven years in concentration camps. After the war, Niemoeller's condemnation of bystanders to Nazi policies will become a call to early action.
His words:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist - so I said nothing. Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat - so I did nothing. Then they came for the trade unionists, but I was not a trade unionist. And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew - so I did little. Then when they came for me, there was no one left who could stand up for me."
...
Truely haunting words. It can be altered and refreshed, and the meaning remains.

Reconstruction of poist war Europe took probably a longer time than we like to remember. After all, we did alot of damage to Dresden, if my memory is correct. The problem with Iraq is now a governance issue. Yes, governance would be much simpler with a martial law in place and summary executions. We don't want to impose that level of heavy handedness. Rumsfeld wanted a leaner meaner more effective armed forces. Part of the lean military is a lack of numbers required for effective enforment of Martial Law.
War is difficult for all nations. Some people hide behind ambiguities about the true strength of thier own country's forces, while others demand the destruction of Israel. But you don't want to talk about Israel.
Saddam did have 20,000 chem/bio hazmat suits (or whatever the number was in the hospital in Al-Nassiryah (or whatever city). Very misleading. Perhaps meant to confuse the Iranians, and intimidate, but it was also frightening for our troops as well.
I do work at a hospital, I do know some people in the reserves, who have been called up, some more than once, one person, a doctor is still deployed.
BTW "Influence" in Iraq is not quite the right word - the word should be "occupation" and "domination".@@@
A difference in approaches. You may not care about stability for the country, or the region, but I think Bush and Cheney do.
@@@Actually Bu$h and Cheney DID WANT WAR with Iraq@@@
Again, a difference in perceptions. The American people had a close election, W claimed victory, invaded Iraq, and was re-elected.
Get over it. Start planning for the next mid-term elections.
