It's been raining all day. My mind is almost as mildewed as the porch rocker cushions. I am sitting here thinking about my name. I was named Maria Ana after my Aunt Maria Louisa and my mother, Ana. My dad had a sister named Mary so he changed my name to Mariana because he wanted it to sound like Mary and Ana. Oh well...I do truly love the name, Maria and am thinking of naming my art gallery by that name. I think if I had a chance to change my name, I'd still choose Maria. What's in a name? Quite a bit. Who were you named after and why did they choose that name? If you could change your name, what would it be? What did you name your kids? Salud, Maria Ana aka Mariana

Oddly, by sheer coincidence I ended up an exchange student in Lisieux when I was 17 and visited the basilica dedicated to her.
If I changed my name, I would be Adrianna.
I have always disliked my name, ssshhhh,,,don't tell my Mom. It is a uni-gender name, yuk. My maiden name was Berg, henceforth Lynn Berg = Lynnberger Cheese!
Named my children all good old fashioned names; Christine, Maree (scots variant of Mary and William IV, and they are all named after an ancestor/grandmother/mother and sister.
With true teenage logic I asked her "Mom, if you wanted me to call myself "Terry", why in the world didn't you just name me "Terry"?
The problem with the 'e' is compounded by my middle name being Elizabeth (my mother's name). So, I often appear as Clair E. And people are apt to turn it in to Claire. =P
I don't think I would change my name. I'm kind of fond of it. =)
Though, I think it would be amusing to name a daughter Cassandra based on the old MSN butterfly commercial where the name was said to mean "prophet of doom" =)
Lastly, my husband wants to name one of our kids after Wedge (from the Star Wars Movies.) I unequivacably said no. Especially since our last name is Dickson. Wedgie Dickson. I can't do that to a kid!
Mariana is such a beautiful name. It break down into such simple syllables, a Japanese feeling to it. There is wonderful symmetry, Mari-ana & Ana-Marie.
And last but not least, look at all those wonderful vowels for a scrabble game!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
My mother gave me my middle name because she said I blew into her life like an unexpected storm. (I was a couple of months early). My middle name is Gail.
When I was a kid I wanted to change my name to Sinaed or Fiona. I had a an attraction to Gaelic names, and thought it sounded musical and mysterious.
: )
Dorine, that name is you. It is an unusual name and you wear it well! It has a nice rhythm to it, elegant. I'm sure folks mispell it all the time! More later - it's 3:07, the emotional hour but I best get back to sleep...I'll finish commenting in the real "wakeup" of morning... Salud,
My name came from my grandma in Europe, Czechoslovakia~and my "aunt" Theresa...my mama's cousin.
I never had the blessing of knowing my grandma; but I was blessed to know my Aunt Theresa's firery spirit!
I love my name, now~as a child...it was too dang-gummed long to write!! :)
Love, light, and blessings~Mama T
my mother just woke up one morning towards the end of her pregnancy and thought "mona" (i would have been paul if i had different parts). she had no idea where it came from, but liked it and stuck with it. and since my father was gone by then, she didn't have to ok it with anyone else!
i, on the other hand, have always hated it. don't know what i'd rather be, though...
no kids, but my cats are sophie, henry, percy and kiki...
thanks for the fun, darlin'.
DIAMOND means a HIRA in hindi(national language of india.)
so i am named HIRAL meaning BRIGHTNESS.
My brother's name is VIRAL so my dad named me HIRAL so that our names get rythmic.
But it often causes trouble when some one calls either of us and both of us answer the guy calling.
Presently, i am not able to think anything else than my name- HIRAL.
God bless.
I also didn't have any kids of my own. Just one stepson who more than makes up for no kids of my own.
I do have three cats - Obake, Harley and Bob.
My kids are Christopher, Sarah, and Zachery.
My other kids are Sadie, Zeke, Maggie, and Napster. Bow-wow, Arf, Arf.
I had a lover (yes, I did) in college who was from Nicaragua. I loved the way he said my name "Leeennnnda". It just rolled off his tongue. It was so sensual. Then I had a professor in grad school who had a Boston accent and called me "Linder". That was cool.
My brown eyed man always called me "Linda Lou" and that is my favorite.
I like your idea to name your art gallery Maria. It's a beautiful and elegant name. As is, Mariana!
My mother's name is Marcella and one of her favorite aunts used to call her Marcia. Mom liked the name and decided to pass it on to me.
I named my daughter Candace, after Grandma and Michelle because my husband and I both liked it. She named her boys Brandon and Jordan when there wasn't hardly any boys by that name. Now both of them are very common names.
My name - nathan - has caused me to have insight into what it must be to be a minority - because I grew up in a time and place when "Nathan" meant Jew to some people.
Ironically - I never knew what a Jewish person was until I became a young man.
"Mariana, Mariana, your star shines so bright,
no one like her, no one to match her name,
no one like her, no one to match her heart
and soul.
Mariana the one and only, her heart beats like
mine, one thump at a time, her name Mariana,
the only one for me. Her heart is pure and true,
her name is Mariana, the only one for me"
Hows that? :) GRINNING:)
I'm back and missed ya:)
The only thing I dislike about my name now is the popularity of the name Breanna and people frequently add the 'a' to the end of mine. I guess so long as I'm not called late to dinner...
The other - my nickname is Bre with family. For the people who can't handle the simple Breanne (Bree-anne. Real hard, isn't it?) I try to tell them they can call me Bre. "Bre like the cheese!" Ha. Ha. Ha. I even had one guy just call me cheese. It took every ounce of formal training I had not to knock the guy off his horse. (I was doing horse trail rides at the time). Other than these episodes, I really love my name.
My middle name Elizabeth is a family middle name...my great-granny's (Alice Elizabeth), my Aunt (Patricia Elizabeth). I dearly like the name Catheryn Elizabeth for a little girl.
My fiancee's name goes back for generations...traced to England. He hates his name, but doesn't like my idea for a boy - Braden Charles - Braden is a strong Irish name like mine, Charles is my dad's name.
Mariana, your name is elegant, like you. :) Bright blessings to you!
I took a confirmation name later of Elizabeth.
I know many Kathryn Elizabeths, and many Elizabeth's as a middle name.
My daughter is Kristina Elizabeth.
I got my name by a toss. My father has two names in his pocket when he went to speak to the priest, and he picked Mona, thankfully! Because the other name was an awfull old maiden name, and I would've been teased all of my school years.
A note to my name, is that my friends in Guatemala refuses to call me mona as it means Monkey (in the female connotation) So they call me everything but mona; monita, monis, monitis, monona, moni...
Even tried to call me monica, but there I draw the line, because it doesn't feel like my name!
If I had a daugther I would call her Mariella, because my mother was Ella, and I think it's beautiful.
If I had a boy I would name him Victor, great strong name, and very international.
And Liz, wauv, you sure went through some names there!!
Good thread--names and genealogy are big around here!
My name was chosen by my dad and is Hebrew--Judith, that is. Funny thing is, a few minutes before my birth, asteroid, Cowell, arose, then moi, then asteroid, Judith.
How synchronicitous is that?
My daugther is Maya Elizabeth (my mom's family passed Mary down through the line but my older sis had already snapped it up for her 2nd daughter), so using Maya--a form, some say, of Mary was my way of joining in the Mary-esqueness of it all, Mariana-Maria.
Son is Brian James, named after two of his many Dublin uncles, dad's side.
And now you know the rest of the story! ;)
Brian is a strong name and all the Brians I know are good and solid! Salud,
My kids are Thamara and Pablo. Thamara in portuguese means date (the fruit) and her hair has that exactly color of red, honey, fire, and so... Pablo was named after the poet Pablo Neruda, and has stolen my heart forever.
Fascinating, all these names and how they became owned.
My name is Barbary, a mystery unsolved.
I am Bonnie Joyce, named for my grandfather Barney who died right before I was born. In the Jewish religion we always name after the deceased to keep the memory of a loved one alive. I also have the female version of his Hebrew name, Barucha, which means "Blessed".
My oldest is Lindsay Rose, named for my grandmother Lillian and her father's grandmother Rose.
Then I had Lauren Shae, named for my papa, Louis, and her father's grandpa Louis. The Shae was my creative version of the word Shay or Shea. But really it was because my wonderful papa used to call me his Shayna Maidela, which means "pretty baby".
And last but certainly not least, my Benjamin (Ben) Louis was named after his grandma Janet Louise -- who's birthday he was born on a year after she died. And his Hebrew name is also my papa's.
My ex and I named our daughter Maris. It means sea star. Must have worked because she really shines.
Actually, I made this whole think up. I have found it interesting though that such a lineage doesn't exist. Juniors seem fairly common, the thirds and once in a blue moon a fourth. Wouldn't the pressure get greater (on the fourth, for example) to continue the tradition? I've never seen anthing beyond 4. Maybe in China!
I'm named after my Dad's sister Cecile. He had two older sisters and a younger brother. I was named after Cecile who he thought the world of, but he always teased me that my temperament was more like his sister Margaret who he didn't care as much for. Both girls died of tb when they were teenagers. In my family Cecile is pronounced Ceesul...like Beany & Cecil. I've had people argue with me that my name is either pronounced wrong or spelled wrong, but the Aunt Cecile I knew lived nearby, and was my Dad's great Aunt, by marriage to my grandmother's brother. Aunt Cecile came from Illinois or Kentucky, so I always figured maybe back in those days in that part of the country that was how the name was pronounced and spelled. Maybe those Hillbillies didn't know the difference? When people have the gall to argue with me about my name I basically tell them "I don't care if my name is the "f" word...if that's what my parents chose to call me and I decided to continue to go by it....that's the way it's going to be."
In school if the teacher couldn't figure out how to pronounce my name after the first couple of weeks, I gave up. I absolutely hated my name until I was adult and realized there weren't many Cecile's in my world, anyway, and I was unique and one of a kind. I'm also proud to be named after my Dad's favorite sister and carry on a bit of the family's heritage.
Juniper!!! Ohhh now, is that for real? Ludolf, when is the next Gathering of the Gatherstockers? I hope to rekindle whatever we had!! Salud,
Neither does my father.
My six children all have 5 letters in their names, and all three girls have the names of someone "royal" as their middle name. I did this, so we could tell them that all women are truly princesses.
Their middle names are Anne, Grace and Abigail
But the neurotic part of my name is my full name. Rene Anne Edde, my dad was an organizing freek. My name had to all have the same amount of letters in it and have a rhythm. Now I know where all of my compulsions come from!
My sister (older) however, got the family heritage names. Claudia (my dad's middle name is Claude) Christine (grandfather's first name is Christ).
We name our only child Katelynd (kind of invented the spelling) with Beth for her middle name. It's a name that grows and changes as she does. For most of her childhood she became Katie Beth.
Me - I keep with Judy most of the time....but always had this fantasy, that when I am published...I will be Judith once again.
In high school I wanted to go by my middle name Carolyn, but never followed through with it. I always liked the name Heather, and thought that would be a nice name to have, but I have grown so accustomed to being Cecile, I will stick with that. Since I and a friend write about the histories of red light ladies I sometimes fondly call myself Cecile Ho, but don't ever allow anyone to call me that when they are angry!
My sons are Kolten Lawrence-middle name after my PaPa. He was to be Chase Barton for the entire time I was pregnant but I had a crazy pregnant dream a week or so before I had him and that's who he was, so that's who he is! :-). Klayten Bryan is my youngest son. Bryan is after my husband's granpa whom I adore and Klayten, well, we needed a K name to go with Kolten and decided on the ten to compliment on Kolten so he wouldn't feel left out as there is a five year age difference between them. I also have a 21 one year old daughter who we adopted as 14. She obviously had her name Shay Lynn when she became ours, but it fits her and I can't imagine her as anyone else!
Well, you know about my name from the rant I just published about it. I still hate it.
I gave my kids the most normal, common names of the day. I didn't want them to have to go through anything like I did. Lisa, Kristin and Matthew.
Somehow, my mother had enough sense to give me a normal middle name. It's Lynn. I don't mind that at all. When my grandaughter was born a couple of years ago, I went into a brief panic when my daughter told me she was naming her after me. (I started a family tradition of giving middle names to my kids that honored someone in the family.) Imagine my relief when she told me she was going to use my middle name, not first name. Her name is Haley Lynn. Good call. I think she would have really resented Haley Ina.
Miz Ani! Oh dear I' m sorry - I'll stick to Ani! I hope you like that! SAlud.
I looked up Regina in the dictionary, it says Queen :) that made me feel a little better :)
When I was divorced I changed my first and middle names. I became Elizabeth, which had been my favorite name for a long time. My middle name was supposed to be Lauren, but it was misspelled as Laren. By pronouncing the accent on the last syllable, it works for me.
