The general perception that we all have, because it is what we are constantly being told, is that the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier triggered a series of incidents that has led us to where we are today. The initial kidnapping occured on the Gaza Strip, of course, on June 25th, and if you were to be asked if the forgoing perception was true and you said "yes...that is my final answer," well.....bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......wrong!
At the end of this post is a rundown of the operations by Israel against the citizens of Gaza during the month of June alone, and prior to the kidnapping, as reported in the press. As one reads this list, it is obvious that Israel was pressing for an incident that would justify the escalation that has occurred both within Gaza and within Lebanon as well.. It has previously been reported that the current battle plan was actually prepared years ago for the Sharon Government.
The question remains, why would Israel start a war at this time when it claims to have no territorial ambitions against Lebanon and the residents of the Gaza Strip have been very effectively isolated by the erection of the wall that extends around their entire land based border? As a prelude to a possible answer - and I don't pretend to be an international genius - I would suggest that the most important events for Israel in the year 2006 are the fall elections in the United States. One of Israel's objectives could be to influence the outcome of these domestic elections. It is perhaps not entirely coincidental that many comments have been made on Gather expressing concern that an international incident might be engineered to improve the chances of the Republican candidates. Well, just maybe this is it.
Along the same line, I believe Israel is attempting to energize the neo-conserative movement in the U.S., the movement that is currently attempting to influence Bush to attack Iran and Syria now. Israel is quite happy that we are mired in Iraq and they would love to see our involvement expand into other countries. It seems to fit with this theory that, just the other day, we heard Newt Gingrich, a leading neo-con, eagerly announce that "World War III has begun."
And naturally, if Israel can weaken Hamas and Hezzbolah, then that would be a great additional achievment. Personally, however, I think Israel has about the same chance of achieving that as we do of eliminating terrorism in Iraq.
If nothing else, this developing military action highlights the importance of the fall elections. If any group is to be energized, it should be the democrats, who are this country's only hope for stopping the insanity.
Published items concerning Israel's acts against Gaza in June.
Professor John Dugard, reported as follows to the UN Commission on Human Rights after his visit to the Gaza Strip from 6/9/06 to 6/17/06:
"Gaza is under seige. Israel controls its air space and has resumed sonic booms which terrorize and traumatize the people. The targeted killing of militants is on the increase. Inevitably, as in the past, such killings have resulted in the killing and wounding of innocent bystanders. Israel also controls Gaza's territorial sea and fires missiles into the territory from ships at sea. Within Gaza, medical services have been seriously affected by the prohibition on the funding of medical equipment and medical supplies managed by the Hamas-led Palestine Authority. The non-payment of salaries to Palestinian Authority employees has affected both hospitals and schools, as employees cannot afford to travel to work. Unemployment and poverty are on the increase. After a long period of closure of the Karni commercial crossing, this crossing has been reopened, but it still processes only a limited number of trucks with the result that Gaza is still short of basic foodstuffs and is unable to export its produce."

thanks for your article. It's not anti-semitic to question Israel's motives, tactics and timing.
It also is odd that the entire US neo-con chorus proclaimed we now have WWIII on our hands. We don't and we should be working to prevent further escalation.
If the nations like US and Israel are to claim any kind of moral authority, we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard than "terrorist" groups. It is disappointing to me that there seems to be very little international, collective action taken against Hamas and Hezbollah. Instead we have the US and Israel individually taking action. This tends to divide factions along religious lines and escalate the conflict.
We need international peace-waging efforts. Unfortunately neither Bush nor his Israeli counterparts are moving in this direction.
But still the United Nations as an unbiased entity must step between the warring parties to stop this.
Why is it that when someone puts the spotlight on Israel they are considered anti-semitic? Perhaps because they are fighting their old enemy who is now considered our enemy also. I agree that Israel couldn't be happier that we're in Iraq.

tricky
Apu, it seems you are resorting to the usual bait and switch tactics of the right wing....ho hum....I guess you'd think that anyone opposed to the disgraceful foreign policy of the United States is anti-American....oh, that's right, of course you would. Thomas and Lisa have already expressed their view that you are off the mark, but I wanted to add my comment that your position is ludicrous. Do you think Alan Waldman is anti-semitic?
Martin, it looks ever more convincing that the second act of this disgracefully engineered incident is underway.....that is, of course, when the right wing steps up to the plate and tells us how vital it is now for the Republicans to maintain control of Congress. Thanks very much for posting Cheney's comments which, of course, were right on cue.
However, as President George W. Bush once said...."You can't fool all the people every once in a while, or something like that." With that in mind, we can only hope that the gullibility level of Americans has mellowed out enough to withstand the onslaught of propaganda that will be coming down the pike.
If you think my post is one-sided, Apu, how about preparing a list of incidents caused by Hamas during the month of June....I'd like to see it.....In reviewing the news for the above items, I saw virtually nothing that compared to what Israel was doing....
interesting and completely useless rumor underway - enjoy.
crazy world, david...
i thought the idea of condi/laura made much more sense...
You sound like a well intentioned Californian.
I only wish the rest of the world was as picturesque as Hollywood.
But ITS NOT Wake up! This is not a movie, unplug from your biases and embrace reality:
THE WORLD IS GOING TO SHIT AND 80% OF THE POPULATION IS NOT GOING TO MAKE IT!
6.5 Billion mouths to feed, cars to drive, diapers to dispose of, and 13 billion trigger happy fingers running around looking for your white anglo-saxon rear end is not something any of us want. Every single one of them resentful of all the movies made in your fine state and their SHITTY LIFE that does not EVEN COMPARE!
Right now you might be getting angry at me... but don't be.
Ask yourself, have you ever felt uncomfortable with people 'different' from you? People who might wish you harm. People who might want to take advantage of you.
Sure we all want PEACE.
Iraq for instance needs to be left alone militarily by the US.
A few bases and security for the diplomats/oil is enough.
But Gaza?
Have you EVER SEEN GAZA?
It's a GIANT GHETTO with people who SHOOT ROCKETS at the population.
What are you going to do about that?
You're the government... You already pulled out and allowed for elections and what did you get? Hamas. HAMAS! A group that categorically REJECTS THE EXISTENCE of their neighbor -the very people who allowed them to take power.
There is NO GOOD WAY to deal with GAZA.
Just like there is NO GOOD WAY to deal with IRAQ.
