Harwich is located at the elbow of the Cape on Nantucket Sound which means it has warm water beaches. We found Harwich to be charming and irresistable with its many shops, galleries, and its lovely homes. I especially enjoyed the beautiful flowers that are planted everywhere.
One of our first stops was at a garden center that will filled with flowers, unusual plants, and modern sculpture. It was a great way to start our day.

There seemed to be beautiful flowers everywhere we looked. Orange lilies and blue hydrangea were in bloom. It seems that every house had them planted. Nature is really a gift.

Harwich also has many quaint shops and bookstores. We had a good time exploring. Here's one shop that we saw.

Many of the homes have rocking chairs on the front porch. They looked so serene and made me want to go up to the porch and sit right down.

We had delicious and hearty sandwiches at a little restaurant called The Mason Jar and set out to walk some more. We saw many gorgeous homes that were right near the beach. Here is one I liked:

Although we hadn't planned to go to the beach, we decided to check out a motel my friend had stayed at 20 years before. It was all boarded up but we were able to sit on the deck anyway and look at the water. Though we had not brought bathing suits, I dipped my toes into the water. It felt delicious and cooling.

As the day drew to a close, we had to close the door on our wonderful day in Harwich. We hope to come back soon and will surely bring our bathing suits next time. I hope all of you who have not been to Cape Cod will come and visit Harwich. It is a beautiful town with a wide range of lodging from quaint bed and breakfasts to charming inns. It has golf courses, beautiful beaches, and lots of wonderful places to shop. For now I must close the door on our adventure
and head home.

Great article, Clare. I love this kind of thing.
(Nancy, did the color coordination comment have anything to do with this?)
right next door to "Fat Francis" home. He was, apparently, a well-known character on the Cape. People would have their photo taken with him. If I recall, he wore a top hat and vest. At that time we could climb and run down the dunes without stopping straight into the icy-cold blue, blue Atlantic.
One of these days.....
Love New England - they ought to bring it to the West Coast.
