In a wild rush to pack my lunch one day, I ended up grabbing a few slices of whole wheat bread, the jar of peanut butter, and a couple leftover pieces of bacon. Yes, bacon. It was cooked, thank you, but I try to make more than we'll eat so there's crispy bacon in the frig for salads or sandwiches.
Back to the original point: I like Peanut Butter & Bacon sandwiches. Not to dismiss Elvis' favorite, I'd just prefer to have the salty crispness of bacon alongside my peanut butter. If I would have had some slices of sweet onion that sandwich would have been perfect.
What do you like with peanut butter? Do you have any good recipes that use peanut butter?

I'm so boring.
The best part is NOBODY will try to mooch some from you.
Hi Lulu - do you mash or just slice your banana?
No one would dare call you boring, auntie. Can you share deets on the jam? Once I had a pb sandwich with some sort of date-based preserves and vowed to always look for different jams and jellys ... p.s. I've never had a Fluffernutter either (much to Bob Collin's dismay) wanna make a virtual lunch pact?
Michael. I didn't know that about you and I'm not sure what to think, other than I probably won't swap lunches with you anytime soon. You might taunt me into trying a bite...
Stephanie Sarah Vowell is CORRECT.
PB on apple is good
PB on banana is good
otherwise, PB and Jam for me.
The best use for PB is to make "Monster Cookies"
PButter
butter
oatmeal
M&Ms
Choc chips
sugar
to die for..
I normally hate peanut butter cookies, but these rock.
Monster Cookies scare me, ~Frick~, there's just wayyy too much goin' on in 'em. What kind of jam do you like?
I like my PBJ w/ low sugar strawberry jam. Mmmm. And the peanut butter must have just a hint of honey.
"Our" squirrels ♥ PBJ with ANYTHING. I need to figure out how to construct a "peanut butter feeder" for them.
Sounds good Sara Evans, apple + Peanut Butter... could this be the peanut butter candy recipe you mean? ;-) Sounds simple & good!
Tina, exactly how hot is that peanut butter if it burns you? Is it just hot from the toast or are you heating it up?
*tilting my head* A peanut butter feeder for squirrels, auntie? You mean the ones at the Wildlife Rehab or in your backyard? Couldn't a large pinecone slathered with pb (sans birdseed) work?
Sweet pickles. Aileen, I think you broke boundaries with that one. Really? Bread and butter slices or the sweet gherkins? I'll try it if you REALLY recommend it.
Hey yaChristina!!!! I meant to tell you in an earlier reply - Pink Lady apples + fresh peanut butter = lunch / snack to me... even now.
i love pb and bananas. love love love it. trader joe's natural crunchy. and if no bananas, either thick-cut marmalade, or homemade plum conserve. oh yum!
but pb on celery with ants (raisins) is yum.
Oh Faith H., I forgot about pb & lettuce! I take it you still can't eat the sandwich, even tho you can enjoy pb now?
Dear auntie: someone who wanted to use up celery. (I secretly like celery)
I also like peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches
I also like toasted English Muffins with butter, peanut butter and honey
But then I also like bacon and honey on toasted bread sandwiches also.
I've never tried toasted bread, butter, peanut butter, honey, and bacon. But I'll bet it's very good and messy. Maybe just one slice of toast folded over and all that stuff in it.
Rick what you've described is a good snack to eat over the sink. Thanks for reminding me of crackers!
My better half will often smear saltines with butter and a dab of pb to spoil me. It is one of those things that tastes better if someone else makes it for you, especially if you're not feeling 100%.
Cheeeeese? Steve P., tell me, what kind of cheese do you serve with your peanut butter? Something besides a sharp cheddar? We must know! (and perhaps try it, of course.)
Liz Rice-Sosne will you SWEAR that catsup is good with pb & onion? If so I will risk it, but I'm a little nervous...
I like peanut butter best on graham crackers. The slightly sweet crackers compliment the nuttiness of the PB.
Scientists: Get right on that!
Graham crackers peanut butter and grape kelly.
Nothing at all beats that.
As for my Jam preferences, actually it's Strawberry All Fruit. I used to only eat grape jelly on my sammiches, but switched to strawberry.
It's the hydrogen that is added in hydrogenation process that makes peanut have a self life and then it's bad for ya.
Therefore, stay natural toots.
Anyone have a favorite brand?
Smooth or chunky?
Skippy
Tradition
On a couple slices of dense wholewheat bread, there were a couple slathers of crunchy peanut butter, slivers of sharp cheddar and some squirts of hot sauce.
You had to be there, I suspect, or you had to be as hungry as we were.
And yes, that Parker's stuff is great.
I am convulsed with laughter at this juxtaposition. Even for a self-confessed caffeine junkie like me, the implication that Coke would be a more healthy option is just too hilarious.
I know *exactly* what you mean about how much better food tastes after a day spent paddling around in a canoe (or hiking). Even warm beer tastes good, and Lipton noodle dishes are a delicacy.
Rick if you try a grilled cheese with pb, let me know *grin*
I have a jar of gherkins handy, Aileen!
Frick, one of my friends got a monster cookie blizzard from DQ and gave me a taste. That's all I have to say about that. The All Fruit line is yummy!
Lisa Westerfield you have shared a new mix! Puffed rice, eh? Well, well, we'll give it a shot!
*My fave is whatever is in the natchy refrigerated section that's just peanuts.
*My family and friends have a thing for JIF, except my Mother who is a Skippy gal.
*We're all in the creamy camp, but I like crunchy too.
Luke I'll have to check that brand out! Thanks for the recommendation.
Actually, the sandwich you describe sounds good, Kate. As for eating after paddling, hiking, or not sleeping in the tent due to whatever (bad weather, bad camping neighbors, general wilderness) well... food is just plain good.
Hi long ago! Do you eat those grilled pb sandwiches with a fork and knife or out of hand? Serve anything alongside?
The only other sign of needing to go to the store is when I'm getting low on my medicine, which would be Gin. All other item I can do without but not those two.
I must have peanut butter and Gin in my house. All other things are optional, well except maybe honey.
Ps:
I also get Parkers Farm smooth peanut butter, as I find it to be the best around here anyway.
Rick you didn't tell us what brand Gin (errr, medicine) you enjoy. These details are important!
*adding PB & sliced turkey to the "try this" list* Thanks, John S.!
auntie, you crack me up. If there isn't a pb-a-lator (ala the Mr. T language filter) there should be.
(paraphrasing Jim Gaffigan)
So, how many of you (besides me!) went home and had a peanut butter snack last night? Super chunky Jif on graham crackers. Woulda added honey if we had any.
Ah, the power of suggestion...
1) First I had whole wheat bread w/ a smear of creamy pb & drizzled with honey.
2) Then I had a simple square of dark chocolate with some pb on a spoon.
3) Then I had to tell myself to stop.
psst thanks for the laugh, Frick!
but of course, sandwiches taste best when cut into four triangles (*not* squares) -- honest!
Heather Dichter, thank you for suggesting small, sweet, and smartly cut sandwiches with chocolate chips!
If you can't bring yourself to buy a whole jar, then sneak off to the Mall of America and pick up one on the sly from that PB sandwich vendor.
We won't tell!
My mom also pulled off the peanut butter and lettuce sandwich trick, especially when "pay day" was long in coming.
That sounds like comfort food Laura A. Was it always Jif for you?
Okay, what is this pickles and peanut butter business? Pat S. now I'm (somewhat reluctantly) adding your pb and dill pickles to my "try this" list. Will do the double smear, take a deep breath, and remember that you like it. *grin*
[groan] It's that bitch, Jenny Craig. It's all her fault...
Waidaminnit... I have fans?!?
Peanut Butter is sometimes best straight out of the Peter Pan jar. Creamy. On a spoon or finger. Sometimes when I'm feeling cosmopolitan, I actually slather some on cinnamon toast.
Truth is, I'm powerless over the stuff. I only buy it when we're threatened with a hurricane.
Linda Douglas, do you use natural peanut butter? Some of the pbs out there have a startling amount of sugar...Sounds like your grandkids are in the fluffernutter club!
That sounds quite good, Jon McTaggart - and I must admit I wouldn't have dreamed that combo. Is the bread just coarse grain or a darker grain?
auntie, of course you have fans. Tell you what - when you get a treat on the Jenny C plan lemme know and we'll have a Fluffernutter tasting party. Or we can skip the pact, and I'll just write about it. I didn't realize the closest place to buy Fluff is in New Hope, Minn.
Your answer was worth any wait, Cheryl. Cinnamon toast (no raisins for me) and pb... mmmmmm mmmmm. When you're stocking up, how much Peter Pan Creamy pb do you shelve for the emergency?
What a terrific image! Thank you for that.
Here's a quick recipe for peanut butter cookies--
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg.
Form into walnut size balls, smush them with a fork as usual for pbcookies, and bake. really good!
Ooooh Fred M., I'll have to crack open Lynne's cookbook...
I echo Kate, Sylvia P., "It's the banjo of the food world" is possibly the perfect statement. Your snack recipe does sound addictive - there are many layers of flavor. It is on the "must try" list now, along with your follow-up of bread 'n' peanutbutter pickle and mayo on whole-grain. Since multiple people have mentioned the mayo I guess I'll have to ... *gulp* give it a go.
Angie H. I won't question scrambled eggs on pb&j, especially not after reading everyone else's concoctions. It is now added to the "must try" list and marked for breakfast.
Thanks for the quick & easy pb cookie recipe Carol Voigts, it sounds very sweet. Are they better in a low oven or will a regular temp work out?
http://www.jif.com
They have some great recipes available there, and also there is an email recipe newsletter that you can sign up for too. I have discovered that product brand websites are great sources of recipes.
My favorite peaut butter -- Jif creamy peanut butter.
Also, have you tried their honey peanut butter? It is really good. I keep both a jar of the Jif creamy and the Jif honey peanut butter. The honey peanut butter has a thicker and sweeter consistency than the creamy.
Grape jelly is now one of the three common foods that I will not eat.
They taste pretty good, but, my god, how lazy a society have we become when we can't even spread pb and jam on bread ourselves???
First salad in a bag, then pre-made PB&J sandwiches, what's next? Water sold already in a glass, so you don't have to go to the sink yourself??
Oh wait... bottled water...
Also, another childhood favorite of mine - waiting until the pb jar is close (but not tooo close) to empty, then cleaning it out with a knife and licking it off, savoring every bite! Granted, we're talking about a normal stainless flatware knife here with a fairly dull serrated edge.
When we were raising the kids on the farm back in the 70's, what we didn't grow ourselves, we bought in bulk including 30 # buckets of freshly ground crunchy pb. from Koeze's in Grand Rapids. The kids mostly ate it in bowls mixed with honey, also in 30 # tins, and forgot the bread!
Kate Foley it is unpossible that you were the only one. Why, oh why, did pb&j sandwiches have to get so smooshed? Other sandwiches didn't seem to get so abused. Dare I ask after the other foods you won't eat?
Fred M. you could single-handedly ruin the "uncrustables" line with your description. Each step sounded good!
Is Linda K. lucky or what? Is there a grind-your-own somewhere in the Twin Cities?
Mimsi G., pb on a Ritz is very good. Pb sandwiched between two Ritz crackers and dipped in chocolate makes a very good addition to the holiday cookie tray ;-)
Thanks for the follow-up, Carol. Wow, that was bulk buying at its finest, wasn't it!
Hot pepper jelly? Michelle S., that sounds like a great addition to that sandwich!
No fried eggs.
No ketchup.
No grape jelly.
This from a woman who, on a different board, answered a question about "strangest food ever eaten" with snippets on piranha, rattlesnake and guinea pig.
