I've been languishing in a good book dry spell. I hate that. You crack open a book, begin to read, lose interest, put it down, pick up another one, ad nausium until you feel listless and irritated. Or at least I do. You find other things to do. That dusty cross stitch project you started ten years ago and never finished, for example. Clean the cat box. Turn on the TV. But it's not the same. You decide to try again. You pick up a book, one you hadn't tried before. Will it be the one to bring you out of your slump?
I got a chance to read an electronic copy of Michelle Rowen's Angel with Attitude. Just finished it this morning. Thank goodness because I was about to give up on reading and take up knitting instead! *g*
The main character, Valerie, is a fallen angel, kicked out of Heaven for a sin she doesn't remember committing. She gets a job as a maid at the Paradise Inn and bides her time until she gets a lead on a key that would get her, and her ailing boss and fellow fallen angel, Barlow back into Heaven.
She tracks the key down with the help of Reggie, a suspected lecher whose witchy girlfriend turned him into a rat, a seven-foot-tall scary demon who writes romance novels on the side, and Val's Tempter Demon, Nathaniel, whose last chance at continued existence rests in his ability to escort Val to Hell.
Rowen, who also wrote the vampire novel Bitten and Smitten, penned a paranormal with humor, great characters, an engaging premise, and a plot that kept me guessing. (Which is becoming increasingly difficult to do these days, unfortunately.) Val and Nathaniel's goals throughout the book contradicted each other by 180 degrees, which made for quite a lot of conflict. So much so, that it seemed as if there were no way to resolve things and that made the denouement even more satisfying.
Angel with Attitude is an exercise in what happens when an irresistible force meets an unmovable object. With jokes.

Highly recommended for paranormal romance fans, especially for those who have tired of some of the more erotic titles in the genre.
