Today is Canada's 139th</ birthday. Whoohooo!
For those of you who don't know, "O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. Well-known composer Calixa Lavallée wrote the French lyrics to accompany the music written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir wrote the lyrics for the official English version, which now includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.
So sing along with us as we celebrate in the Great White North!
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
