Sometimes, even though I know I shouldn't, I stay up late. Like 1 AM. That is what happened Wednesday night. Then, I couldn't get to sleep. When I did get to sleep, I was "awakened" by something shaking my bed. Now, since I have fibromyalgia, sometimes I do have muscle spasms that wake me up. But I know the feeling of those and this wasn't it. So, still in my barely-in-my-body state I thought it was the cat doing some 'cat thing' on my bed: licking, scratching, playing, etc. Nope, no cat. I thought it wasn't worth waking up for, so I dozed back off.
Again, the bed shook*. A little harder this time. Enough to wake me up to look around for the cat again. Still no cat. This was about 5:30 AM. I know, because I looked at the clock. As I got back in my body, I remembered there was something I had meant to do the night before (print off some grandchildren pictures for my husband to take to work) so seeing that the light was still on in the kitchen, I got up to do that print job.
The pictures were printed and the husband was out the door and off to work about 6 AM. I went back to bed and snuggled with the cat who had finally made his true appearance in the bouduoir. Wouldn't you know it though, I couldn't get back to sleep. I looked at the clock, assessed how much I wanted to sleep vs. getting up, and finally gave up and hoisted my buns out of bed for the final time that day.
My usual routine (after taking my meds) is to get on the computer and check emails, etc. That was what I was doing when the phone rang about 8:15 AM. I saw on my phone that it was my son calling on his cell phone. I thought he was just calling to check in to tell me they had stopped for breakfast and their location.
Every parent's nightmare is to get "that call", and my son knows this. Since he was very young I had always told him that if he had to tell me something important, to begin with his condition, then give me the details.
So, this phone call began with, "WE ARE ALL OK". Then he began to tell me of their roll over accident a short time before his call. The good news is, they ARE all ok. The bad news is their 2003 F350 was totalled, as was their almost new car hauler trailer. Their sandrail, newly rebuilt, was ejected from the trailer and skid about 20 ft. on its top. That will need to be repaired. Their quad runner that was strapped in the bed of their truck was 'smushed' on the top and may be a loss too. The accident happened on I-40 just outside Kingman, AZ.
While I kept my brains, composure and wits about me during his call, I shed a few tears after we hung up. But I also thanked 'whoever' or 'whatever' it was that shook my bed to get me awake that morning. Usually, I am still asleep at 8 AM after a late night. Even during the day, I am in a fibro fog most of the time, and if anything momentous happens to wake me up, it takes me a few minutes to reach lucidity.
So, a big "thank you" to ....whatever it was that woke me up to take that important call! "WE ARE ALL OK" sounded so good! Thanks for shaking the bed!!
