My favorite books out of all the ones I've written are my fantasy series, entitled The Wolverine Chronicles. The first novel I'd ever written was THE WOLVERINE AND THE ROSE, the first in the trilogy. It took me eight years, from 1996 until 2004. At that time, I didn't take my writing seriously. It was something to do when I was bored. I frequently dreamed about being published with THESE books. But I never looked at it as more than a pipe dream.
Then when I finished the book and wrote the second (took me 8 months instead of 8 years like the first), I began shopping the series around. It was rejected at TOR and Dorchester Publishing, as well as LUNA, the paranormal/Fantasy line of Harlequin.
Then I found an e-publisher/print publisher called New Age Dimensions. They LOVED the books, and offered me contracts as soon as they read the books. The short story prequel and the first novel were both published for a few months, maybe 2 or 3 months before the company went under and closed their doors.
All the euphoria I felt at finally being published with THESE books came crashing down. Then we authors that were cast adrift were contacted by another publisher who offered to take a look at New Age Dimensions' novels. I immediately sent them over for consideration after being told that the books from New Age Dimensions would get priority over the other submissions. For months, I never heard word. I recently sent them a follow-up letter asking for status, and they still haven't gotten back to me, not even to tell me to please be patient.
Looking over their guidelines for submissions, there is nothing prohibiting me from submitting the same stories at another publisher. They do not require exclusive submitting rights. So tonight, I decided to send the series to Samhain Publishing, the very same house I just signed a new contract for with my paranormal romance HEARTS ETERNAL. I figure it's probably easier to get in the door with a publisher that knows me and that I'm familiar with than one that I don't know a thing about.
So for now, I'll just sit back and see what happens. Keep your fingers crossed for me that *someone* gets back to me regarding my kick-ass fantasy series. :P
Wish me luck.
