Tilly wandered to another graveside.
"Hello" she said to the sad-faced man "My Daddy's dead".
Her mother smiled apologetically as she led the child away.
"Darling" she whispered "You mustn't talk to strangers".
"Not strange, Mummy, sad".
Mum and man exchanged rueful smiles.
In the fullness of time they wed.

we are not strangers..this is how I see it ! the child understood..they do understand so many things..and once we were there too...and loved the last words too.
Thank you for writing ..from the core !
Yes, Betty, the fifty words expand to novel with the last line.
Masterful, Moya!
Excellent, Moya!
Years ago I was on a University Committee that wrote a report to our Board of Trustees in which we added a comment that related to an 'in loco parentis' perspective. In it we wrote : "Every student is an important 'book' which each of us must learn to read."
In this latter day I think I would add, or perhaps even substitute : "Everybody is an important source of REVELATION and PROPHESY, and our need is to learn from and to listen to every person we encounter , CAREFULLY."
Thank you for the beautiful imagery,
Dick
