My summer has begun. I, the flower of the summer, face forward like the red hibiscus smiling towards Main Street. Today is Friday. I must catch up on my assignments. I started the day, after the usual charade of reading, cleaning, and organizing. I started the day by driving to the Grevemberg Mansion at the City Park. I photographed that for an upcoming chapter, Blue Moon Sunrise. This is where we used to go as teenagers to listen to those wonderful 60's dance bands. You know, saxaphones and peg leg pants. I drove past the Sterling Sugar House down Irish Bend Road. Remember there were many Civil War battles here. I arrived at the old plantation store. I sat with Mr. M and Frank under the whirl of an old ceiling fan. The store has been there since 1925. Everything is old unpainted cypress. I drank a coke.
I interviewed an old cane farmer, age 92 who used to plow behind a mule for 8 hours a day and then walk 27 miles to the dance in town. Then, he would walk back home. He said that he loved to dance. Then, I went to New Iberia on the back road to see if my favorite bookstore needed any more books. James Lee Burke lives in New Iberia part time and this is his bookstore. I picked up the book he'd autographed for me. I also dropped off a book order.
I went to a quaint little restaurant just as it was closing. They were delightful to let me in and served me iced tea and a salad. The place is filled with original art. An art opening is coming up and they invited me.
Driving back home on the old highway 182, I decided to stop and talk to a local historian. She was putting up artifical vines and flowers for her daughter's wedding tea party the next day. We had a margarita, maybe two. We decided to trade favors, she'll do more research on mama's old house and I'll take pictures for the cover of her next book. I stopped at a local watering hole and interviewed someone about music and dancing in the old nightclubs. He was an expert on the late 40's. He talked to me for an hour. I went home.
My brother, the chiropractor, adjusted my back. I drove to my dear old friend, Jim's house, and drank a glass of wine. He has Alzheimer's but remembers me.
Now, I'm back home drinking iced tea. Sometimes days seem to drift and connect and have a sort of reverence that makes you feel as if that's the way things were meant to be.
I'll soon begin my four hours of typing the transcripts from this week's stories. In the meantime, I shall relax a bit. I hope your day was fulfilling. Tell me about it. Salud.

today, we had a nice peachy sunset (not as gorgeous as last night's!) and we saw the great blue heron slowly glide on by. such fun!!
I love the idea of a Peachy sunset - oh now that's divine - blue herons are extra special - what a life you lead, Miz Jessie - but you know what - I'm right there with you. Truly, we're all part of a great big whole! hugs and salud,
To share my day. I bought my husband home from hospital yesterday afternoon and so I have some nursing going on. Well, a little more than usual.
What a wonderful day you've had from hibiscus to iced tea on an afternoon porch. That ole cane farmer is a favorite, imagine walking that distance today! As you point out some days just seem to click.
Thank you for a fun summer story,
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
Your vivid descriptions, apt attention to detail, and "knowing" that everyone has a story are treasures.
Thank you for a beautiful read!
