As I write screams of swiss fans can be heard from neighbers' apartments across the way..there is a game between Togo and Switzerland..my daughter's school has a giant screen and the children may view the games..for me, while i hold the remote control in the house, i call the shots, the children are nicely playing Swiss train station , one is selling tickets and the other is buying..the third child has been sacrificed to his father, in other words , he is watching the game with papa..
What does this have to do with the topic of Eurbia?
Everything! As i read www.haaretz, my eyes catch an article with that titel..it is about a jewish woman who emigrated from Egypt and is researching the Moslem world relations with Europe. It seems that Europe has been making concessions to the Arab world for decades because of various business dealings, among them Saddam Hussein with France, etc.
Nowadays the Europeans are waking up to a reality where 40 million Moslems are roaming the streets of London and Brussles and Amsterdam and the right wing is going up and up..but still they remain helpless. A Spanish journalist wrote an article expressing sorrow about the European Jews murdered in Aschwitz, if only they were here, the ones who contributed to the European culture instead of the Moslems who are flooding Europe, planting bombs turning Europe into a mini Middle east, but alas, the article is a few hundred years too late...remember the inquistion? The jews had been expelled from Spain in 1492.
A Jewish researcher called Bat Yeor ( translates to "The daughter of the Nile" in Hebrew) would like to expose the relations between Moslems and nonMoslems in the Moslem countries, no, she claims, the jews were not treated better in Moslem countries, they were always treated as second class citizens, she writes who had to leave Egypt as anitsemitism increased in the 1950's.
The Europeans, she claims , are turning a blind eye to the growing Moslem population that will eventually take over the European continent without a bullet shot as their birth rate is 4 times that of the Europeans, and with them will come intolerance to other religions and fanaticism. She writes as concerned with the growing antisemitism , but i see this as a real problem of who is holding the remote control, who will get to call the shots, while Europe is asleep and many parts of United States, who will be around 100 years from now?
The Europeans with all their heritage or the Moslems with their heritage...and their kindness to strangers?
Look I never studied history, nor political science, however i live in Europe, perhaps in the most tolerant country to immigrants these days, still there were demonstrations this weekend by immigrants against a change of policy by the Swiss to limit immigration.
I have only one child in the Swiss school system , where there are 95% foreigners in classes depending on how rich the area is, i am talking about middle class income..my own son is in a small class for children who have some difficulties, that is 100% foreigners and you can be sure he is the only one with a father that comes from western Europe..why? politics..the Swiss tend to place their children more and more in private schools or move away from the city where the foreigners are a majority..i know this sounds racist to Americans but this is not the U.S.A. we are talking about foreigners that come to Switzerland and use it as a place to sleep and eat, they are not part of the society, do not care about social conditions and take advantage of the system which gives them subsidised housing, and many benefits, they then proceed to bring their many relatives in, do not socialize with their neighbors who in turn are not interested in sociaizing with them, they have no language in common, nor cultural values..
Every time there is a crime, the identity is given as a Serbian, Turk etc. only rarely is it revealed to be a Swiss...that is one thing i would liketo see less of..the lableing.
Don't get me wrong, i spent some great years in N.Y.C. as a child and had friends from Greece, Italy, China , Africa etc. etc. however if you think the U.S.A: is far from being the melting pot , here in Europe it is even worse,as we have the natives, the Swiss in this case, versus the immigrants...a war is in the future while there are some mixing and socializing..i in a very naive mode invited a Croatian girl to my daughter's barbeque, Kosher susages and all , all Jewish girls from my daughter's school and again and again invited her to join us in walks in the woods as both parents worked however as i pass their garden i see the girl having tent parties and never inviting back, i feel a lump in my throat..i think of how many chats i have had with the mother over the fence and have seen her parties where the guests were always Croatian..it makes my blood boil.
On the other hand there is an exception in a Kurdish lady i have met whose son goes to school with my son and always invites but i wonder is there politics involved here?
I remember my daughter befriending once a Kurdish girl in the park, she had on a t-shirt with the American flag, this was the time of demonstrations in Bern against the American involvement in Iraq, you can be sure the Kurdish community was not wasting tears over Saddam Hussein's fall and they were the only ones to be wearing an American flag and proud..i even heard a canadian saying she was afraid to speak English, at the time.
Look whatever politics you preach the facts are that in Europe these days a war of cultures is taking place and luckily i am in a good off side place in the Jewish community who is more neutral than neutral can be..however i know for a fact that ther eare more and mroe swiss that are voting for the right wing here, and support legislation limiting immigration as it is mostly Moslem, as much as i like my one Moslem friend,( an Irish convert) i would tend to agree that the future of Europe as it hides its head under the sand is Moslem, without a doubt, they are the ones having babies, they are the ones carrying on their traditions , add to that those immigrant groups that just come to Switzerland to barbeque the Swiss cows and do not care at all to decide on important political issues, you will find that Europe is in big troubles and it is no wonder they are honking their horns as their soccer team wins, it is a great distraction from the land that will soon burn under their feet..
I feel torn as i know in my heart it is very wrong to place people in groups, to label them, we jews have been there before but as the president of Iran wants to reopen the question of whether there was actually a holocaust , i feel i must somehow decide where i stand.
I know there are many Moselm immigrants like my friend that had escaped political persecution in Turkey, and there are other s suffering in certain Moslem lands, it is not fair to shut the door to those but what about others that are jumping at the chance to escape their horrible economic situation and could not care less about European society and its issues , and what about the terrorists and the extermists that are misusing the free speech in England, for exemple , to preach hate? what about those?
Who should be let in and who should not?
Are the Europeans justified in limiting immigration?
As for me, i am only counting the days till i return to Israel . I am still under the illusion it is the promised land, and i believe that as soon as the children grow up and can leave their European father, they will not think twice about living in this confused state and will choose at least to live in a county where there are open debates, from people whose opinions i more or less understand as well as the place they come from..some of them have been immigrants too, escaping torture .
The quest for peace, the need to love still hurts , despite the sharpening of knives around me,there seems to be so much to fix in the world, such a need for a sprinkle of love dust from the angels.
The white dove still seeks a place to land, while the flood rises, will she find it?

i edited. thanks, i am going for a walk to cool off..this was written in the heat of the moment..
on second thought, extremism of any kind is something we should stay clear of!
Now I just sound crazy. But I mean it, and I still didn't get to what I wanted to say in response to your piece.
I'LL BE BACK.
i am kind of off religion at the moment..forming a more humanist philosophy, however am aware that the danger is the lack of tolerance to others which is the problem with these extremists..i edited my original article thanks to my friend br>i think though we have to be careful of racism of anykind, just be careful..
i miss the twin towers photo, why did you take it off?
good to see you again, bye!
Anyway, back on topic a bit, I think a country should limit it's immigration to the amount that can be assimilated naturally over time, merge into communities without creating depressed areas, and not have a huge economic impact. Not that a people should forget their roots, but an orderly process that adds to a country, not detracts. There is a lot to be said for diversity, but there has to be common goals, tolerance of ideas, and a commitment to the country you've moved to. Citizenship?
World population increases have put pressure on immigration systems, and we are feeling the impact here as well. My thoughts anyway.
Take care, and thanks for your thoughts.
Lewis drew parallels with the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Many people believed that Austria's superior culture would dominate the rest of the empire. However since Austria had a fraction of the total Empire population, the reversed happen.
interesting. Having lived throughout Europe myself, I find that you
have 20/20 vision. Thanks for your heart-felt expressions.
