You can audit "Practical Aspects of Modern Cryptography." It was taught at the University of Washington, Winter 2006, by Josh Benaloh, Brian LaMacchia, and John Manderdelli. The course materials and videos of the lectures are online.

List of recommended textbooks (I have these, and they are decent, I just finished Practical Cryto: worth every cent).

Handbook of Applied Cryptography, by Menezes, van Oorschot, and Vanstone (CRC Press, 1997). The book is available for free download in PDF or Postscript format, from Alfred Menezes's website.
Applied Cryptography (2nd. edition), by Schneier
Practical Cryptography, by Ferguson and Schneier
Cryptography: Theory and Practice (3rd. edition), by Stinson

Will, I checked out the first two of the above links - not for the faint-hearted or non-literates in programming like myself. But given that you're a boffin in this, can you suggest a very simple book/ online tutorial in html? I want to know how to insert links and such into my articles and comments, but the info on Gather for doing this goes over my head.

My favorite Maven meister makes things seems oh so much easier than they really are? Cryptography? Sheeeeee, I'd be better off with Satanic magic number theory!!!
