What a beautiful, real, poignant film!
The film is shown through the eyes of a little boy who dreams to ride a bicycle, get a doll for his sister and work to support his family.
Dissanayake does an amazing job of contrasting the lives of the poor and rich communities in Sri Lanka. While Sira's family struggles to earn a living as street performers, wealthy people drive around in their cars, go for a picnic in the park with their family, etc.
Sira faces one challenge after another as he tries to earn a living, especially since child labor is illegal. When asked what his address is and where he gets his mail, he says we don't get mail. We live under the banyan tree near the hospital.
Many people try to take advantage of him and his family and still they continue to persevere! The movie is a real eye opener and powerful! Special thanks to the Freer Gallery of Art and the Sri Lankan Embassy for showing it! I doubt I would have come across it on my own.
