Got up at 6, ready to publish the photos from Montreal. Uploaded 3 photos, one at a time, created a caption, tags, then copied it into the article. Created a SECOND caption....
This worked for three photos from Montreal. Then,
POUFF !!!
"Page Cannot Be Found." GRRRR !!! I tried refresh, anything. Nothing happened.
So, I tried uploading the photos, again. THIS time, I decided to upload all the photos first, then copy them into the article.
Got 1 photo uploaded. Then,
POUFF !!!
It disappeared. Again.
3 hours of work and NOTHING !!!

What IS it with Gather's servers, anyway?
Is Gather not equipped to deal with the volume of participants on Gather?
Has Gather upgraded or added to its servers?
Shouldn't we expect better service from Gather's servers?
I've even had problems commenting, this morning. And, the day is still YOUNG...
I KNOW I'm not alone... I'll try the Montreal photo thing tonight at midnight...SOME Gatherites sleep...
What do y'all think?

Kevin, what is free here (or so very nearly so as to be moot) is the CONTENT that is WHAT ALLOWS GATHER TO EXIST
AT ALL and as one of those providing fodder for this thing I think it's appropriate to bitch any damn where we please..
In fact I'd say that unless the situation is resolved it would be appropriate for the high posters ALL to post a short article a DAY asking why this system isn't being fixed...
Every Day, anywhere they bloody well pleased..
What say you Kathryn????

As for us, let's face it. Gather might be created to facilitate the kinds of things we like to do (and I believe that's Tom's vision), but we ain't paying the bills. When push comes to shove, Gather will have to make decisions that balance the needs of the folks paying the bills against the needs of the users.
When those two things are in conflict, you will see a dramatic change in Gather's functionality or in it's user base.
I do write EVERYTHING in Word. This problem occured in the publishing tool, because I was uploading images...I've uploaded them many times before without problem.
I type all my comments directly. I type 70 wpm or more. Going off line would be counterproductive. Gather's servers are just slow sometimes...
Got your message about Picasa. I'll get it and see if everything works better. Thanks !!!
Gather addicts galore, I hail you! :-)
Commenting upon one's own articles generates next to no points, if any at all. Certainly the 16 comments I've wrtten did not generate one point. Nobody would actually try to get points by commenting on their own articles.
Kathryn especially loves to comment on her own stuff, but it's users like Johnny 5000 who actually get into trouble from it from the Gather management. It's kind of a crazy place here.
I've been experiencing an almost stand-still situation for the last two days. The problems are pretty big. I've been having a very hard time viewing articles, so I've not been able to comment very much.
This is a touchy issue. While I agree with Kevin that Gather knows about these problems, I also agree that their silence on the problems is a matter of concern.
The last article I posted looked strange after it was up. I was able to correct some issues by editing it, but it still does not look quite right. I publish off line and simply paste to the article publishing block, so nothing has changed on my end.
We could borrow a few lines from Stephen Stills "For What it's Worth"
to describe the situation:
" There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear "
" There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong "
" A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side "
As an aside, I know for a fact that Tom and crew have the resume of an experienced web architect/executive who has written code to handle hundreds of millions of daily requests :-)
Kathryn, where does Rich state this? I have reviewed his comment several times, and I certainly can't see anything that even remotely comes close to this. He has indicated that Gather has a resume from someone. That's all. Do you even know what the problem is? Is this person even going to be hired? Is this person even NEEDED to fix the problem?
...and why haven't you published this to the 'Building a Better Gather' group? Otherwise, all you are doing is exacerbating the difficulty of this issue.
But I feel totally free to discuss what is obvious by plain observation without any inside knowledge. What I have observed is lots of downtime for upgrades, increased instability, and degrading performance. Perhaps commitments to investors on certain features were a top priority. That is always a tough balancing act! My experience sitting in board meetings of web startups for 10 years is you must spell out the implications of the board's priorities. For example, if they wanted points live and subscribers up, they should understand how that will impact the experience that each user has unless certain core technologies are addressed first. It sucks to tell them that, because it is like admitting you failed to build it right. But do you want to try to explain later why the users went away? I don't know anything about the company or board priorities. If I were on exec staff and had Tom's ear I would discuss the pros and cons of adding membership while core dsign flaws remain in place. It is harder to fix the more densly populated the databases get. Marketing, engineering, CEO and customer service should sit down and have a big offsite powwow, without the board, align around a plan, and sell it to the board. Maybe that has happened. They seemed like very smart folks (even though I had only 15 minutes with Tom and would have liked an hour).
I now do all my writing off line in MS Word because the Gather publishing process is so sub-standard (e.g. compared to Blog Spot and Blog Explosion) AND because articles can suddenly just disappear into the ether when I press 'Publish' (it happened as late as yesterday). Indeed, I don't know when I hit 'Post" for this comment if it will actually be posted; and if I were to add a second comment, I know I've first got to refresh this page. I shudder to think what is going to happen if this site's membership drive attracts large numbers of new users - will everything just stuff up?

Coming back, it too took me a lot of time to publish an article here!
