I wonder why the soldiers fight
When sent to battles not their own
In distant places far from home
A mother prays for peace somewhere
Neath shell and mortar's glowing glare
She speaks, but they don't understand
The death toll grows in her homeland
Tho children simply want to play
They'll die if they go out today
Horrific violence at their door
When will the children fear no more?
While pundits speak of casualty
The people see reality
While soldiers murder, rape, and die
We hear the politicians lie
A father buries his own son
He knows what lies and greed have done
Yet brother seeking to avenge
Kills innocents with his revenge
I try to channel energy
Send love and peace and harmony
Are prayers to make the blind to see
Just some crystalline fantasy?
The power hungry beat the drum
In answer soldiers blindly come
What duty does a soul fulfill
What honor gives the right to kill?
While thousands fill the streets and shout
"Stop killing now! Go home....Get out!"
These voices raised in protest cry
They scream the truth while people die
War is not just, to kill is wrong
Can't fool us with your dance and song
We all together channel love
While hawks swoop down and kill the dove
How dare you say I just don't know
Freedom takes pain and death to grow
The only "freedom" I can see
Is dirty deals and blood money
With open eyes I see the schemes
Of evil men, who kill the dreams
It isn't freedom they strive for
They profit from an endless war
If I can see this, so can you
I wonder why you choose not to
Is it just simpler to believe
The powerful when they deceive?
Marines gone crazy terrorize
Kill innocents despite the cries
Pregnant woman on the way
To hospital was killed today
As I seek peace and love and light
I wonder why the soldiers fight
When sent to battles not their own
In distant places far from home

Universal Soldier lyrics
by Donovan
He's five foot-two, and he's six feet-four,
He fights with missiles and with spears.
He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen,
Been a soldier for a thousand years.
He'a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain,
A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.
And he knows he shouldn't kill,
And he knows he always will,
Kill you for me my friend and me for you.
And he's fighting for Canada,
He's fighting for France,
He's fighting for the USA,
And he's fighting for the Russians,
And he's fighting for Japan,
And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.
And he's fighting for Democracy,
He's fighting for the Reds,
He says it's for the peace of all.
He's the one who must decide,
Who's to live and who's to die,
And he never sees the writing on the wall.
But without him,
How would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone,
He's the one who gives his body
As a weapon of the war,
And without him all this killing can't go on.
He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
And brothers can't you see,
This is not the way we put the end to war.

Because it means destruction?
Of innocent lives
War means tears
to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
and lose their lives
War! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
War! It's an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest in the younger generation
Induction then destruction-
Who wants to die ?
War! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War! It's got one friend, that's the undertaker
War has shattered many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled bitter and mean
Life is much to precious to spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life, it can only take it away
War! It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War! Friend only to the undertaker
Peace Love and Understanding;
tell me, is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way
War! Huh Good God y'all
What is it good for?
You tell me
Say it, Say it, Say it
War! Huh Good God y'all
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it.
Nothing!
- Edwin Starr-
Your words here and George's are very powerful and I agree. Feels like we are screaming at the walls though.
All of you are open eyed individuals who obviously get it. All I can say is,
War IS terrorism, and nothing is going to change that.
Pam, we ARE screaming at the walls, but some of the noise goes over.
Aileen, Oh Honey, don't sell yourself so short.
There you go man
keep as cool as you can
face piles of trials
with smiles
It riles
them to believe
that you perceive
the web they weave
and keep on thinking free.
I am sorry you think this is a condemnation of all soldiers. We need to protect ourselves and aid others when they are in need. However, there would be no war without soldiers and it is not insane. The analogy about no cirme without police is not accurate. If people don't commit crime, there is no crime. Police and soldiers do not do the same thing.
Bless you.
Your opinions are well put and I respect you. This is NOT meant as a condemnation of soldiers, rather a condemnation of the power makers who use them.
I pray for the safety of soldiers (ours and others) and wish there were no war.
I think those who serve are being used sorely.
Blessings,
