that takes us into a dinner conversation betweenÂ a divorced couple as they discuss the possibility of their daughter leaving home to go away to college. Like the omniscent narrator of a story, we get to listen to their interior dialogue as well as their exterior dialogue. I found the way she captured the heart-rending mess we can make of conversations when we don't know how to listen, when we interpret what the other is saying based on our own experience, breathtaking.Â
This is one of the Gather pieces that I have never forgotten. However, having forgotten the author, and wanting to reread the piece and send it to another Gatherer,Â I sent a message toÂ my network asking for their help and was beseiged by requests to post the information when I found out.
