I posted a link yesterday for one of my new network friends and she asked me to write a tutorial on how to do this. Since I see many others struggling with it, I agreed.
To post a link while you are writing an article:
- Select the text you want to show as the link. (This is the text that will show up in blue with an underline.)
- Click the button on the "Create Your Article" page that looks like a couple of links in a chain. (If you hold your mouse cursor over this, a tip will appear saying "Insert Link.) A new box pops up for you to enter the link.
- Where it says "Enter URL/E-mail ID," type the location of the web site you want to link to. If you find the web site first, you can just copy the address from the address or URL field at the top of your browser, then paste it in.
- Check the box that says "Open in new window" if you want a new browser window to open when someone clicks on the link. This means they don't lose your article.
- Click OK to insert the link.
- Publish your article as normal.
To post a link in a comment:
This is a bit trickier. You have to know a tiny bit of HTML, but it's not hard.
In the example below, I'm going to type the code you would use slightly differently than you actually would type it. That's because if I typed it correctly, you wouldn't see the code, you'd just see a link.
In the example below, I've substituted regular parentheses ( ) for angle brackets < >. Just remember when you do this in real Gather life, you have to type angle brackets (or some people call them carrots) instead.
(a href="/createEditArticle.jsp")my link text(/a)
Substitute your own web site address for the part that says "/createEditArticle.jsp." The above makes a link to the Create Article page on Gather. You could type something like this instead:
(a href="http://www.whatever.com")my link text(/a)
That's all! Post questions if you've got them.
