This evening I was sorting through Mimi's things which I had brought home to check before sending them to the charity shop. I discovered that Mimi and I have a lot in common. We are hoarders. We are both rich in things that will "come in handy one day".
It took me back to a time when my daughter, aged about 4, came home from pre-school and asked if she could have my collection of wine corks. They were going to make something special for Daddies. Triumphantly, (see, I knew they'd have a purpose) I scooped the lot into a carrier bag while I told her why I had so many.
I know it may sound a little odd but my husband had brought me a frozen octopus all the way from Australia. He had been told that the way to keep them from tasting like leather was to cook them with a cork in the liquid. Naturally from then on I saved them though octopus was never on my shopping list. "Tell that to your teacher " I said "She may find it interesting".
I collected her from school. How did she get on, "Fine". What had she made for Daddy, "A surprise". Had she told her teacher why her Mummy had so many corks, "Yes, I told her...m....I told her...I told her that you were a very good drinker".

My daughter--who knew exactly how to launch the Winnie-the-Pooh game -- thoughtfor a moment.
"I know how to use the computer," she said, thoughtfully. "Mommy knows how to use the computer. Girls use computers. Boys don't!"
