We are emotional beings. Among our emotions are hate, anger, amusement, and love. Of course, we're not the only living things with emotions. Most mammals can express emotion, in terms that we can relate to, such as a pet dog smiling at us, or a cat pissed off that we left for the whole weekend or the cow bawling when her calf is removed from her pen. We, as humans, have plenty of emotions that could rule our lives.
. We can lead a life ruled by our emotions, doing any and everything we feel like doing. We can live like the women on Wisteria Lane. We can "do our thing". We can do what feels good. "Give into yourself, you deserve it!" We can "let 'em have it". We can go on hating people. We could even "do them in". How about affairs because we fell for that person. Who cares who else it hurts.
However, our species has also been blessed with choice, conscience, -- thinking. This means that we decide how we will behave by using our brains. Our choice , our conscience, our thinking can determine our actions. We can look at our emotions, and where they are leading us. If they are leading us to hurt someone, we can choose to move on. We can choose to live lives of integrity, of value, of cherishing each other. We can choose not to give in to hurting others. We can choose to not give in to every pleasuring of ourselves at the expense of others.
You know what this is, don't you? It's the Golden Rule. Check out this site about how the whole world can run on the Golden Rule.
treat others as you want to be treated
**thanks to a friend, JJ, for starting me thinking that we all need reminding of this.

Absolutely, let's try to have some empathy for the other.
Love to you.
I'm not at all religious (but spiritual). However, I like the bumper sticker WWJD

Good Article, Carol.
I've spent a number of years in studying the Golden Rule and have written what I call the "7 Questions" as a sort of thumbnail aid to using the Golden Rule in everyday living.
There's an article posted on it here and I'd love to have your comments.
