Oh the joys of the service industry! I thought I would take a moment to
recap some of the really interesting experiences I have had over the years. These are true stories.
1. Hotel guest verses squirrel- A vicious attack takes place on the creek. Last year a guest claimed that a crazed squirrel ran up to his wife and attempted to steal a can of tuna away from her, biting her in the process.
He claims his wife was sitting down at the creek that backs our hotel
minding her own business when the squirrel assaulted her and tried to steal the can on tuna.
This guest is very heated about how his wife was bitten and he is yelling at me and all worked up about how the animal my have rabies. I explained to him that I understand his concerns and I offered to call the officials for him so that the proper tests can be done and all that good stuff. He continues to scream at me despite my attempts to help him. He then states he is going to go get his gun from his car to shoot the animal.
I work at a 4 star resort so having some guest brandishing a gun and
shooting things really is not an option and it really destroys the serene
atmosphere we are trying to create. I try to gently explain that our hotel
is on private property and that his gun would surely cause a problem. He
insists on getting his gun and defends his planed actions by explaining he
has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. I try once again to explain (this
time forcefully) that he cannot shoot his weapon on our property and that I will need to call the police if he cannot restrain himself.
He ignored me and marched out to his car to retrieve his gun. As he walked through the lobby with his weapon I was calling animal control and the police. When the police arrived this man was sitting out at the creek with his weapon drawn and aimed at the squirrel who was sitting on a rock in the creek just starring at him. I just imagine him sitting there threatening the squirrel "so, do you feel lucky today squirrel?"
After the man was persuaded to put his gun away he spent the next hour
trying to catch the squirrel with the cop's assistance. They went running
around throwing a sheet over the squirrel and trying to lure it into a box.
In the end the squirrel was never caught and the man's wife did not have
rabies.
The lesson from this story: Do not feed the wildlife no matter how cute and cuddly they seem.
