Today is turning out to be a pretty darn good day! It's overcast and breezy, we just got some light rain showers, the birds are a singing and I feel very accomplished!
About 2 weeks ago I was attempting to get approved for my first mortgage ever. Unfortunately my boyfriend and I were denied financing due to our credit. Obviously we were crushed and I got quite the eye opener when I inquired about his financial status. We had originally had things set up so I would pay the rent and he would pay the utilities, we each took care of our own car bills and everything was dandy- or so I thought.
Turns out many bills were super delinquent! So we sat down and had the dreaded financial discussions about what went wrong, what we could do to turn it around and over the weekend when we stayed with my mother we discussed this all with her.
Yesterday my mother gave us $800.00 to get all the bills up to date. This was completely unexpected and we sort of feel guilty taking the money but we are very grateful!
I spent the morning paying all our bills and now we can proudly proclaim ourselves financially caught up on bills. Dealing with the bills is super stressful but when you can check one of those pesky bills as "paid in full" it really is a relief!!
I really want to encourage everyone reading this to sit down and tally up all your bills, then tally up all your income. Once you have these two numbers subtract your income from your bills, you should come out positive but lord knows I didn't at first. If you don't make enough to pay all your bills and still have money left over then you know where you stand and you can take action to make things right. If you can cover your bills okay then you know exactly how much extra money you have to work with.
It is such a great feeling to get things taken care of and to get caught up. Most of the time it just takes some self discipline and hard work to get caught up. We didn't think we would be able to do it and we had no idea we made $800 more that we owed every month in bills. Now that we know we can plan our spending better and start chipping away those credit card/ student loan debts!!
