Dear Janie,
Adoloscence is the change phase from boyhood to youth. Love and dreams are two predominant things at this stage. As such the destitute boy also wants to dream but with girlfriend... as he observes in present social scenerio. The poem depicts.. how important 'love' is even with empty stomach.
Hope, i have explained my point of view.
