Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin talking about Gen. Michael Hayden's (Bush's nominee for CIA director) alleged desire to see laws concerning domestic intelligence gathering changed:
"He said, however, that with all the publicity that's been surrounding this program, he may be closer to the possibility of asking for a change," Durbin, the Democratic whip, told reporters after meeting with Hayden for 35 minutes."I hope they do and I think they're going to find bipartisan cooperation. I want to find a way to make it legal for us to be safe as a nation."
Yup. You're reading that right. Durbin would like to find a way for it to be legal for America to keep itself safe.
Anyone who thinks it is a good idea to put Dick Durbin's party in charge of national security and the war on terror is a fool.

The old Soviet Union was a very safe place; crime was rare and tended to be rather benign. Why? Because the Soviet Union didn't believe in civil liberties. If the Soviet regime wanted to wiretap you or place you under 24 hour surveillance--they did it. Without oversight or due process. They could take away your job or the livlihood of your family on a whim. Make a fuss about it--why they'd ship you off to a "reeducation camp" for a couple of years. You can't argue with the results.
Apparently, this is what Rob Port believes we should do--gut the Constitution in the name of "safety."
