I saw your dreams falling

Two steps behind inflation

next week's paycheck already spent

unemployment scours the nation

you skip meals to pay the rent

vacillate between fear and hate

tonight I'll hold your smile

Melancholy lurks outside the door

escorted by doubt and confusion

Once you thought you knew the score

tonight you have no reason

You can't trust a turn-around

since you've lost the will to try

Remember tonight when you lie down

I'll keep your faith with mine

Peace eludes reality

security skates thin ice

a thief lifted your freedom

truth ran off in the night

You can place your heart with me

and know that it's safe

and return them when you wake

This is fantastic! OK, so the rhyming isn't perfect, but I can't do rhyming poems at all, so I'm impressed that you took it on...

But, the imagery, the sentiment, the virtual embrace, oh wow!

As someone who's been crushed by the US economy lately, and knows lots of people who are hurting right now, this is the salve, the boo-boo cream I needed.

Thanks, Heather, Magi, Eric, Carol, Ed, Aileen, Richard, and Donna. Your kindness is wonderful! This one has special meaning for me, also. I've always thought of myself as a dream builder, because I was happier helping others achieve their goals than chasing my own dreams most of the time. I originally wrote this (as a song) for a friend who had suffered a huge disappointment. I redid it with the political slant, to cover more people.

Magi, I remember your young friend and hope things are looking up for her. She's lucky to have you to hold her dreams for her.
