From the beginning of the site, food has been a staple of the Gather diet. In fact, Food Talk (food.gather.com), at over 1,200 members, is by far the largest Group on Gather today. Articles submitted to the group are from amateur foodies and professional chefs on a wide variety of food topics. But Food Talk is only one example of the articles that appear on Gather around the subject of food. People write about food-related stories, provide food advice, discuss food issues, and, of course, share recipes! There are so many people writing about food that we can't cover them all. Follow the breadcrumbs below and you will find a savory world of ideas, advice, and opinion about food customs and practices.
Get inspired for weekend meals. Not sure what to make for dinner with colleague or college friends this Saturday? Check out groups like Slow Food from Kurt Michael Friese, Global Cheese Search by Donald Houston, and Wine Made Easy hosted by Shaun Snodgrass. In a few clicks you will have what you need for a well-prepared meal, with finely paired cheese and wine. Make your guests bring dessert, or better yet, email them the recipe for Pots de Crème au Cafe Chocolat by Kevin Weeks. If you have a problem coming up with ideas for the weeknights, join the What is for Dinner group for quick and easy recipes.
Learn more about food politics and practices. Food discussions on Gather go beyond what is for dinner. From Grist.org's discussion of poultry farming and Wal-Mart's doubling its organic food selection, to a discussion of the diabetes epidemic by Dr. Erika Schwartz, Gather is immersed in the food issues of the day. You can also learn about organic gardening or vegetarian and vegan living in groups on those increasingly popular topics.
Discuss food issues that affect your health. Kids are confronted by the temptations of fast food. Many Gatherers avoid fast food, and Shava has made it a clear lifestyle for her son. There is, of course, the discussion of chicken soup from Lillian Reiter, and a penchant for fat that is a must read from Kevin Weeks.
Too many recipes to mention. Whatever style cooking you are in the mood for, someone has created a recipe to go along with it. Nava Atlas offers a great recipe for a spring Spanish vegetable stew and Three New Recipes for Spring. Donna f. introduces us to Kentucky hillbilly cookin', and Donald Houston gives us the ins and outs of Eastern European and Russian fare.
Eating out of the house, too. There are more than a few of you who don't have the time, the interest, or the kitchen for cooking at home. And the Gather faithful can help there as well. Going to Boston for a weekend? Gather member Rick M. created Boston Cuisine for those interested in giving reviews about restaurants in the Boston area. Take his model on the road to other cities, and take on the established reviewers with your own two cents. Archie Whitehill has added his reviews from the Norfolk/Hampton Roads, VA area.
Food, glorious food. Food is pervasive on Gather.com, and the contributions can take you on a trip, make you hungry, or teach you how to be America's next "Top Chef" (yes, they are on Gather too!). Happy reading, writing and eating!.
