Why are images limited to JPG?

Less space than what? If space is the consideration, they could limit image size. I successfully uploaded a JPEG of myself that is 468K, but wasn't able to upload the GIF I want to use for my userpic even though it's only 60K.

It's true that Gather currently only allows members to upload JPG format images. We are planning to make some changes to this to allow other file types. When we originally built this function we needed to limit our tool to accept JPG format so we could better manage the process of resizing and processing the image files to display as icons, small images, and large images. When we make the upgrade to allow other file types we also plan to change the image processing and optimization to provide better quality results for the large images. Basically we will stop enlarging images and display the images no larger than the original size. It's likely that we will continue to create multiple size versions on the uploaded images so it is still unclear if the original format will be maintained. If you upload a PNG we may need to convert the image to a new file format. I don't have the entire answer today because we're still planning the enhancement but I hope that this helps explain where we are today and where we plan to go with this.
