Last year I reaized the more I work from home and travel for business the more I need a laptop. I used to have one at a previous job (but I left there in 2002 and the laptop stayed behind).
My thing is I need a really good monitor for graphic design, photography projects, and just general database work. So I began to look at the widescreens by Compaq. For under $800 it seemed to be a great deal.
This is my first afternoon with my new best friend. I'm glad I stepped away from laptops for a while and let them get better and cheaper.
I was on vacation Thursday & Friday and I did not know what I was missing--I could have killed my layovers very well with the airports free WiFi. I know it's not free at all airports, but it was where I was trying to kill time.
I have caught up on work e-mail (bad on a Sunday I know). This way I start my week off all caught up from vacation and not feeling that out of office stress.
I'm happy to report that this is the best monitor I've ever had. I'm not kidding--and I speak for desktop monitors too. The sound is better than my home stereo (from the Discovery Channel Store mind you). This is also the quietest computer I've ever owned.
I got the 80 gig harddrive, but it also comes in a 60 for only $600 something. I also got the AMD Turion64. So far so good.
Wish me luck, I promise I will try to not spill anything on it while taking advantage of free WiFi at Panera Bread. ;)

My tech support is a great company called Boston Help Desk. They are the outsourced IT department at the company I work for.
That and I'm married to an engineer so he got me all set up with the wireless.
But we don't have a DVD or DVR in the bedroom so this is the best deal going for movies.
I would say keep the 40 for a while longer. My first laptop in the 90s was huge to me with 1 gig!!!
You can always get an external hard drive or zip drive for more space.
Only the best bread in town. Not bed...bread. *sigh*
