1. Down The act of lowering (10)

I used to do crosswords.

That was before my brain grew soggy with tears, before

the me I used to be faded far away leaving only an echo of previous laughter.

1. Down. Lowering! Clouds lower. Ten letters. Clouds lower, press down.

Why try? Nothing makes sense; not these muddled words, not these clues, not this strangely joyless me.
