I don't own a working digital camera (the word "working" is a qualification that comes with some rancor...!). So for me, there are likely to be no original images on gather.
Several times, I've published images from a site with many images, with the caption including a photo credit. If feel that if, for example, I use a picture of flowering horseradish from a site that includes a whole collection of spices in the garden, and include a URL so people can check out the site, I've satisfied fair use.
But, I truly wish I could give a link rather than a .jpg from my local machine. Somehow it feels ikkier to copy the file from a site with credit, rather than to link directly to the site.
Is this a restriction of the resizing you do on the image? I suspect you could do the same resize from an <img> link.
I understand many have original images here, but probably more of us do not.

Like you, I don't own a digital camera either. But I do have a regular camera. And our local Wal-Mart offers a great photo processing option. For just a little bit extra, when you get your regular roll of film developed, you can also get a digital album CD. This is what I do. My personal icon, at left beside this message, is a photo that I took. I uploaded it from one of my digital photo CDs. This is a really great option for those of us folks who do not yet have a digital camera. Hope this helps.
At some point, I'll replace it, but right now I'm saving up for my son's summer day camp options, rent, little things like that...:)
Sorry to hear your digital camera died. If you have seen my travel articles, you know that I am a believer in digital cameras. I would never go back to film. I have complained to Gather management about the image uploading process. I write my articles in MS Word, and I have found that I cannot upload an article with embedded images. I must remove the images, upload the text, and then laboriously upload each image individually and manually insert it in the text. This is a long, tedious process, especially for some of my travelogues that have 30 or 40 images. Apparently, the Gather editor has difficulty with the control characters that Word inserts into the text specifying placement of the images. Whatever. It's a pain in the...
