Cooking Class # 5 of "Do It Yourself"
Characters: Mother Goose, Little Red Hen, Ned Dog, Trudi Goat, Harriet Horse, Camera Man,
Mother Goose: I'd like you all to meet my good friend "The Little Red Hen."
(Red is dressed in apron, has table with pans, etc.)
Little Red Hen: Well, I'm in a bit of a hurry right now because I've got a TV show to do.
(Mother Goose shrugs and exits)
NedDog: Take 2 of "Do It Yourself"
Trudi Goat: And now, we present class #5 of the "Do It Yourself" cooking series, with word renowned author and chef—"The Little Red Hen"!
(Camera man moves in on Red. Red is moving pots and pans around.)
Red Hen: Hello again, today we 're going to be making bread—from scratch. And our guests today for helping prepare our delicious crusty bread are Mr. Ned Do, Ms. Harriet Horse, and Mrs. Trudi Goat.
Now the first thing we do here is get out the grain and dump it into the mill here! Why don't you do that, Ned?
Ned: Oh, can I do that? I don't think I can do that.
Red: Of course, you can do it yourself. Everyone can. Now you notice we're starting from scratch, scratch. And then of course we've eliminated the packaging here. We just got this sack of grain from the farmer.
Harriet: What comes next now? Shall I put the flour in the bowl.
Red: Yes, that's right, dearie. You're getting good at doing it yourself. Now you notice we're adding the rest of the ingredients. Why don't you do that, Trudi?
Trudi: Can I do it myself? Are you sure?
Red: Yes, Dearie.
Trudi: (looking at recipe) Let's see---salt, butter, eggs.
Red: You'll notice we try to get the eggs in the cardboard cartons instead of styrofoam---better for the environment.
Trudi: …Sugar, milk
Red: Now the milk jugs can be recycled down at the bins when we're done.
Ned: Where did you learn to do this, Ms. Hen? (working along)
Red: Practice, dearie, practice.
Harriet: I notice you have attempted to cut down on foods that come with lots of packaging.
Red: Yes, last week we actually demonstrated macaroni and cheese from scratch. Just think of all the packaging eliminated in the world if everyone quit buying those cute little 2 serving boxes of of Mac cheese!
Ned: And I notice it doesn't take that much longer, either.
Red: Oh you're right there. There, ready to go in the oven.
Trudi: Now, can we help clean up?
Red: Sure! Here's a box of recyclables to take down to the bins.
Harriet: But I've never been there. I don't know how to do it.
Red: You can all do it yourselves easily. When you get there, you'll see the bins labelled—glass, plastics, aluminum, tim=n and steel, styrofoam, newspaper and office paper. Just pitch it in!
Ned: I guess we can do it ourselves. Sounds easy enough.
Trudi: And kind of fun too.
Harriet: Let's try it then.
(exit Trudi, Harriet, Ned with bags of recycleables)
Red. Join us next week on "Do It Yourself" when we explore the possibilities of eliminating Hamburger Helper from your shelves. In the meantime—Bon Appetit!
