It would be nice to have more information for new members on why one might subscribe, rather than become a colleague/friend. There are people who have sent me colleague requests who don't publish articles, because (I think) they don't understand what subscribe does.
Similarly, I wonder how many people subscribe to groups. People just join. What is the incentive ever to subscribe rather than join?
It would be interesting to look at the database underlying all this (ok, I'm a geek! :) and see if people are using subscribe at all (besides me! I have at least one subscription).

I have many subscriptions, to groups and to individuals. I subscribe to a group for the same reason that I subscribe to individuals: I'm interested in its content, but I don't want to feel obligated to respond to posts or to "stay current" on its content. I agree that this sort of information needs to be more visible to new members. Some of it exists within the Help document, but it needs to be expanded and made more visible.
Also, jana makes a point about reading content without needing to comment... or staying current... I subscribe to those that are intriguing ot me... so that I can make the comments that I want... let them know that I am a fan!!
