The peepers were singing before the sun set, full moon waning already high in the eastern sky. Tonight's the night.
I drape my cloak of green over my white shoulders and down to the grove I go. The earth smells sweet from this afternoon's pounding rain.
I remove the bottled promise from a nook in the olde oak and anoint myself, bringing the potion with me as I make my way to the alter.
The peepers are louder now, and make a nice soundtrack for my night's revenge.
Lifting the flat stone, I uncover the secret cache of magical tools, encased in sheepskin and leather. The clay earth protects them from the elements, and they glow with anticipation. I return the stone after bringing out my stash, first tossing in a piece of silver.
Unwrapping the sage and lavender, I add a bit of dragon's blood resin and lay them all out in an abalone shell. Taking a charcoal from the stash, I light it and watch the powder shimmer and pop in the dark night. When it is red and glowing, I add the resin and at once the heady scent takes my senses to a higher place. Lighting the herbs, I begin to chant. Setting the Abalone down, just south of the alter, I step over the smoking sweetness and become pure.
I carry the shell around in a circle clockwise and return it to the alter. Carefully, I unwrap my athame, smiling at the glint of it's sharp blade in the moonlight. I thread this fine tool through the smoke, and do likewise with my beautiful wande.
Calling to the four winds, I raise the knife high and invoke Earth, Air, Fire, and Water deities, Mother Earth and Father Sky. Lighting a white candle, I smile with anticipation of tonight's fun.
Satyr comes into the circle, and I greet him warmly. He smells of the woods and deep earth. As I sprinkle sea salt into the horn of water he has brought, we lock eyes and share secrets never spoken. He rings a brass bell thrice, and we are transported far away from our little grove; up into the night we fly nimbly on the wind.
All time, ancient through future are present here, and butterflies tickle my tummy with delight. I call out the name of my prey, and we are at once face to face. Satyr lurks in the shadows, breathing heavily. The man blinks and rubs his eyes, looking about nervously for the source of the hot steam. He can't believe I'm here, and it's obvious he thinks he's hallucinating! Quickly, he orders up another shot and downs it straight away. I just smile.
"Um, excuse me for staring, but you look just like somebody I know," he stammers. I throw my head back to laugh. The bartender raises his eyebrows.... nobody can see me except my target, who runs from the bar and can't get into his car fast enough! But when he adjusts the rear view, guess who? And he feels Satyr breathing hotly down his neck. Oh, this is precious! He bolts from his car, leaving the door wide, and runs madly down the street.
Enough fun for tonight, Satyr and I return to the sky and fly above the city lights a while, then down to the reservoir for a dance with the fae. I'm lost in time, and after dancing the stars away, I return to my little grove. Satyr is gone, and the candle is burned down to its holder......smoke is merely a thin wisp and a bell sounds from afar.
I thank the deities, the four winds, the elements, Father Sky and Mother Earth. I am sleepy and content. Carefully wrapping my magical tools, I skatter the ashes, dousing them with the salt water. Lifting the stone cover, I kiss each item before I lay it down. I'm throwing copper into the mix, and secure them under the stone.
Bare feet soothed on the soft earth, I pad to the oak and stash the bottled promise once again. Faint flickering light welcomes it home, and a fairy wing brushes my finger.
Peepers still call, and I smile to them, grateful for their serenade on this night of justice. Happy to have them sing along. Glad to be me.
